A Reflection from Deacon Lucian
|
|
I am always surprised by how surprised I am when the future is a surprise I never expected.
The disciples may have felt the same way. They didn’t expect the Messiah would come in their lifetimes. And if He did come, they certainly didn’t expect to meet Him or become His closest friends. Or to witness His miracles with their own eyes. Or to be transformed by His teaching. Or to be told that Jesus would be put to death, and that they would become His Apostles who would spread His Gospel throughout the known world.
But of all these surprises, there was one surprise that outdid them all. And none of the disciples saw this one coming: their dead Messiah would become their risen Lord. The tomb where they had sealed Jesus in for three days would be opened, and two angels would stand next to it, announcing His resurrection. And afterwards, Jesus would appear to his disciples and give them the Great Commission to tell the whole world the most wonderful and astonishing news of all: Death has been conquered. Death is now the doorway into eternal life. There is a future beyond this present reality, and Jesus is welcoming all of us into it.
Think about how this truth changes your perspective on life. Life doesn’t have to be a game clock winding down to the final buzzer. It’s never game over, because the clock keeps ticking. Forever. And much to our surprise, we are all on the same team. There are no losers because our shared life never ends. So there is always hope. There is always the next moment to love one another and to love God. We are citizens of an eternal Kingdom.
Given all this, does it really matter whether or not you won the last argument, or your spouse did? Does it really matter that someone else is stronger or prettier or richer or healthier or more popular than you are? Do you really need that next thing you are sure will bring you happiness? The resurrection has already given us everything. Since we will live forever, what can anyone do to us? What can anyone take from us that God cannot give back to us a million times over?
When my wife reads this column, she will likely roll her eyes and say: “Then why do you still worry? Why aren’t you perfectly content all the time?” Uh, yeah. About that. It turns out that despite my best efforts and my seminary degree and my ordination and everything else, I am an imperfect human being. I sometimes doubt the good things God gives me. Which is why I need Jesus. And the Holy Spirit. And other people who will walk alongside me as I walk alongside them. Perhaps you can relate?
The Resurrection is the single best thing that ever happened to humanity. It tells us that we will not stay in these imperfect bodies as imperfect souls. Instead, we will be changed in an instant into glorious beings who will live forever with our God and with each other. That is exceedingly Good News. Happy Easter!

All Saints' Episcopal Day School Interfaith Conversation
Our final Interfaith Conversation of the year is Wednesday, April 17, at 8:00 a.m. in St. Barbara I&II (at the Church). We are thrilled to welcome back our panel of six speakers representing the Hindu, Buddhist, Islamic, Judaic, Christian, and Sikh faiths. Each of our panelists will share their thoughts and answer questions around this topic: What spring holiday or celebration does your religion practice, and why is it important to your faith?
In our community, every individual is celebrated, embraced, and belongs. Diversity and inclusion are guided by our Episcopal ethos, and we value the opportunities for dialogue and growth with events such as our Interfaith Conversations. We hope you will join us for this important conversation.

Don’t Forget to Take the (Tuition) Tax Credit!
Did you know that under Arizona law, both individuals and corporations get a dollar-for-dollar credit on their taxes for contributions made to non-profit school tuition organizations or STOs? For individual contributions, All Saints’ partners with the Arizona Episcopal Schools Foundation (AESF). Gifts made to AESF directly support our Indexed Tuition Program, making a substantial impact on our entire school community.
So what does this mean? How can you participate in the Tuition Tax Credit Program? Watch this helpful video to learn more. Still have questions? We are here to help! Please feel free to contact Wendy Granier.
The deadline to designate your 2023 tax dollars is April 15, 2024.
All Saints’ Legacy Circle

We encourage you to consider remembering All Saints’ Church in your Estate plans, by joining our Legacy Circle. The process is simple. Please contact Lori Brooks in
