RUSTIN

SUNDAY, AUGUST 18th, 2024

Our favorite Hollywood tradition has begun: as we usher in summer, Crossflix is here! Finding faith in film, Hollywood will preach on 8 films and their intersection with Biblical teachings. Rev. Hannah Adair Bonner will preach on Rustin, based on the true story of activist Bayard Rustin, who faces racism and homophobia as he helps change the course of Civil Rights history by orchestrating the 1963 March on Washington. Her sermon will be based on Philippians 2:1-11. Oppenheimer is available on Netflix and Apple TV.

All of our Sunday morning services are live-streamed.

Next week, Kevin McCloskey will be preaching on Past Lives, which is available on Apple TV and Paramount Plus.

HARMONY TOLUCA LAKE

Join us for an “Our Story” worship service at 10:30 am! We continue our current sermon series “Bad ___ Women of the Bible” with a message from Pastor Mark focusing on Rahab. Incorporating the scripture passage from Joshua 2:1-14, we see how God elevates the status of women – challenging our preconceptions while inspiring us to live out our God-given call to be faithful.

Following the homily, we’ll enjoy an “Our Story” convo with Harmony’s Julie Dove, currently recurring as Connie Viniski on Peacock’s Days of our Lives, as well as hosting a new podcast series: “True Texas Crime: The Significant Life of Angela Stevens.”

And we’ll be abundantly blessed by Gattison and the worship band with empowering music – lifting our voices and spirits as we rejoice to the Lord.

It’s going to be a wonderful Sunday, so invite a friend or two to Harmony! Let’s experience the JOY of being together as an affirming faith community and the second campus of Hollywood UMC (one church, two locations).

We hope and want to see you in person! Ways to connect online with Harmony: HarmonyFB for Facebook; HarmonyYT for YouTube.

CICLAVIA STREET CLOSURES

It's one of those Sundays this week: street closures by HUMC. You can still get here! Just plan on a little more time. On this day, 6.6 miles of streets will be temporarily closed to cars including Highland (between Santa Monica and Hollywood) + the 101 s/b exit for Highland (9c) + 101 n/b exit for Highland (9b), as shown on the diagram to the left. Please use Cahuenga. We'll see you Sunday!

UWF BOOKCLUB

Following “The Gifts of Imperfection: Let Go of Who You Think You’re Supposed to Be” by Brene Brown. The United Women in Faith book club will begin their new book "The Seed Keeper" by Diane Wilson in August.

This is a novel about a Dakota family’s struggle to preserve their way of life.

The meeting dates will be the following Mondays at 6pm: August 26, September 9 and 23.

SMALL GROUPS

We have updated our Small Groups with all the new happenings! From UWF to a group on aging to West Hollywood hangs, there's a small group for everyone!

Are you interested in starting a small group? Small groups are a great way to create community and build strong friendships. Let Devon know or stop by a welcome table on Sunday to find out more about starting a small group.

BLESSING BAG BUILD

Our homeless ministry's custom of building blessing bags of necessities to distribute to our unhoused neighbors will be back Sunday September 1st after service. Please help us collate more of this vital ministry in the gym, and take some for your car to hand out!

FAREWELL REV. KATHY

Rev. Kathy Cooper Ledesma is retiring and her last time preaching will be Sunday, September 8 at 11 a.m.

Following worship there will be a retirement celebration in the gym as we celebrate Rev. Kathy’s 38 amazing years in ministry with the past 18 years as our senior pastor. Let’s celebrate Rev. Kathy and her ministry among us.

Please keep Rev. Kathy in prayer on the next phase of her journey, retirement, as well as our congregation during this time of pastoral transition.

DINING OUT WITH HARMONY

Harmony’s next “Dining Out” tasty experience to support local restaurants will be Wednesday, August 21st at 6:30 pm at sweetgreen (4320 Riverside Drive, Toluca Lake). This venue, known for its customizable salads and bowls, emphasizes fresh, locally-sourced ingredients and sustainable practices. Come for fellowship and let’s enjoy the offerings of food and fellowship! To add your name to those attending, contact Jason Hecht.
