Dear HPN,
Happy 4th of July yesterday! We have so much to be thankful for in our country! We hope you had a great day of celebration and you are having a wonderful summer! For those interested, here is a great article on the history of America's Independence Day. We also want to highlight an article from HPN member Kimberly Katiti, who has a fascinating perspective after God opened her heart when she used to hate July 4th! We love the way God continues to liberate minds and hearts, that we can all go to Him about everything!
LA has finally crossed into summer, and at least all of the writers who are striking at all of the studios are staying warm. But let’s pray for the tension in our industry due to layoffs and as we wait for the SAG/AFTRA negotiations to hopefully finish before mid-July in order to avert another strike! Honoring a Longtime HPN Friend and Local Chapter Director (LCD)
Our amazing New York and then Pennsylvania LCD, CARLOS ORTIZ, went to heaven on June 21st and we want to honor this creative, faithful servant, leader, friend, pray-er and visionary. Carlos served HPN for almost 20 years and we miss him already! We ask that you please be praying for his family and loved ones, and especially his devoted wife Lee, whom we love!

HPN CELEBRATES 22 YEARS WITH GLOBAL LCD SUMMIT!
Our HPN Local Chapter Director’s SUMMIT is August 3-5th. Over 65 volunteer Local Chapter Directors from 9 countries are gathering in Hollywood for panels, prayer walks and a movie premiere. Please pray that everyone gets to Hollywood safely and that we have a joyous time together as we show all that God is doing in the entertainment industry. We’re praying that everyone leaves with more vision to pray for Hollywood than they came with!

We want to celebrate this diverse list of talented industry professionals, who have achieved recognition for their work in the 6 categories possible for receiving a Star ont he Hollywood Walk of Fame! The HPN offices are only 1 block north of this world-famous strip, and we take this opportunity to cheer on those who have worked so hard, and inspired so many! Let's rejoice in the many creative talents that make up our global industry!

THE WGA WRITER'S STRIKE
The WGA Strike is now in its 9th week and we need to continue praying for negotiations, peace and wisdom amongst both the negotiators and the strikers. Here is a good description of what the issues are and how the process is going:

SAG/AFTRA NEGOTIATES TO AVOID STRIKE
SAG/AFTRA has just announced that they will extend their negotiations to mid-July in order to try to avoid a strike. Let’s pray that they can come to terms within the next two weeks and that it will also speed up the writer’s negotiations. We all need to get back to work and your prayers for a fair, mutually beneficial decision can make the difference!

DISNEY-OWNED ESPN LAYS OFF TOP EMPLOYEES
Disney’s massive layoffs have not stopped. As part of their 7,000 corporate layoffs, ESPN employees are now feeling the cuts. 20 top ESPN anchors and executives were let go on Friday. Please pray for the employees and their families who have to find work during this difficult time in our industry.

COMIC-CON IS COMING!
The huge 53rd annual international convention, Comic-Com, opens in San Diego, CA on July 20th - 23rd and the attendee badges have already sold out! They are expecting over 130,000 guests from around the world throughout the 3 day conference, and many will be dressed in costumes (called cosplay) and ready to watch and buy anything that has to do with comics, graphic novels, science fiction, fantasy and super heroes. Let's pray that Christians will bring the love and Jesus to the convention and that people will surprisingly find their identity in Christ there, not in their characters, graphic novels or heroes!

TRAJECTORY OF SUMMER BLOCKBUSTER FILMS
The 2023 summer film attendance is low and professionals tell The Hollywood Report why: "This summer is a stress test,’ says one top studio executive, adding that 15 percent of moviegoers still haven't returned to cinemas amid the rise of streamers and financial worries.” One example is the decline in enthusiasm for Super Hero movies. The Flash is a disappointment and the Studio is starting to question what the public wants to watch. Let’s pray for the industry decision-makers and the Christians across America, who have a strong say in what movies these studios will make.

Barbie BANNED IN VIETNAM
One of the summer blockbusters coming out in July is Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Authorities in Vietnam have banned the film in their country, saying that “The film contains a scene that depicts a map with the “nine dash line,” a representation of China’s territorial claims in the South China Sea, which Vietnam says violates its sovereignty.” This just points out the power of films and how they can impact global political relations! Let’s pray that American films can bring unity and not division across the globe. HPN is asking that the Lord turns this into good and that Barbie will start conversations amongst believers about the power of entertainment and what our responsibility is.

AI IS BECOMING MORE OF A REALITY
We are now in the world of AI (Artificial Intelligence) and Chatbox GPT has changed the trajectory of our industry. Please pray that the handling of Artificial Intelligence will be dealt with by wise, discerning leaders who understand the future of AI and the effects it can have on our world. AI can be used for good or for evil and so we want the Lord to be in charge.
