Rent Control Amendment for First Reading: As you may be aware, the Mayor issued a veto for Ordinance B-550 that was passed 5 to 4 at the most recent Council meeting. The new amendment that is on for first reading this week reflects ongoing discussions by the City Council to take elements of B-550 of merit - such as the requirement that tenants must be notified when landlords request rent calculations. The City Council acknowledges that there are some landlords who continue to experience financial difficulties as a result of COVID that necessitated lowering rent levels; this latest amendment represents a compromise to allow for a one-time adjustment to the legal rent level that was in effect in March of 2020. I know that the Community Development Subcommittee is continuing to discuss this latest amendment in hope of achieving a consensus of the Council in support of the proposal.
