1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa (1886)

Eureka Springs, Arkansas

1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa is a mountaintop vacation retreat hand-constructed of Arkansas limestone by Irish stonemasons at a cost of $284,000. When this “Grand Ol’ Lady of the Ozarks” opened, the railroad had reached the village and brought tourists eager to sample the healing waters of the local springs. Located atop the historic district and surrounded by acres of gardens, forested walking trails, and restored Victorian shops, the hotel retains its historic character all while offering a spa, rooftop dining, and other luxurious amenities. Eureka Springs ranks consistently as a top destination for the arts and has been named the "Wedding Capital of the South" by many within the hospitality industry.

Omni Mount Washington (1902)

Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

Omni Mount Washington is located at the base of stunning Mount Washington, at 6,288 feet, the highest peak in the Northeast. Omni Mount Washington offers two golf courses: the award-winning, 18-hole Mount Washington Course and the challenging 9-hole Mount Pleasant Course. Meticulously restored to Donald Ross’ original 1915 design, the 18-hole Mount Washington Course reopened in August 2008, and has been named New Hampshire’s “Best Course You Can Play” since 2009 by Golfweek magazine. Omni Mount Washington was inducted as a Charter Member of Historic Hotels of America in 1989.

Pinehurst Resort (1895)

Pinehurst, North Carolina

From its humble beginnings as a pasture to becoming one of the premier golf courses in the country, Pinehurst Resort is steeped in the sport’s history and traditions. Historians and golfers celebrate Pinehurst Resort for its role in popularizing golf and providing blueprints for what a golf course should look like during the Gilded Age. Pinehurst Resort’s founder, James Walker Tufts, hired renowned golf course architect Donald Ross to oversee the day-to-day operations of its golf services. Ross went on to design four of Pinehurst Resort’s nine championship golf courses in play today, including its most famous course, Pinehurst No. 2, which was constructed in 1907. Pinehurst No. 2 has served as the site for more championship tournaments than any other golf course in the United States. Pinehurst Resort was inducted into Historic Hotels of America in 1991.

Historic Hotels Worldwide Most Magnificent Ceilings and Domes

These Historic Hotels Worldwide destinations offer breathtaking ceilings and domes. To view more magnificent architectural wonders, in this issue we are releasing a sneak peek for subscribers to The 2024 Top 25 Historic Hotels Worldwide® Most Magnificent Ceilings and Domes list.

Hotel Bristol Palace (1905)

Genova, Italy

When Hotel Bristol Palace opened in 1905 on one of Genova, Italy's finest thoroughfares, it mesmerized its first visitors with its brilliant take on Art Nouveau-style architecture. Beautiful marble awaited guests as they stepped inside, as did outstanding woodwork and ornate moldings. Perhaps the most memorable architectural feature since it opened is the breathtaking elliptical staircase that ascends every floor of the hotel. This famous staircase is not a single ceiling but a layered maze of stairs that extend above anyone who dares to look up. The white elliptical and white Art Nouveau-style staircase gives viewers a mesmerizing optical perspective. Those who dare to gaze up from the bottom are treated to the impression that the colorful stained-glass dome at the very top floor is a blue and violet iris looking down on them from within the white oval atrium. Hotel Bristol Palace was inducted into Historic Hotels Worldwide in 2022.

The Fullerton Hotel Singapore (1928)

Singapore

Named after Robert Fullerton, the first colonial governor of Singapore, The Fullerton Hotel Singapore began its life as an ornate post office and is Singapore’s 71st National Monument. The Straits Room, located on the fourth floor of the hotel, is known as an exclusive enclave distinctly well-appointed for formal banquets, private receptions, seminars, and press conferences. Previously used as the billiard room of the prestigious Singapore Club, its lofty height, unique coffered ceiling and crystal chandeliers are simply magnificent. The ceiling is 90 years old and was sculpted by Cavaliere Rudolfo Nolli, an Italian sculptor and architect from Lombardy, who worked mainly in Southeast Asia during the first half of the 20th century. The Fullerton Hotel Singapore was inducted into Historic Hotels Worldwide in 2011.
