Hire Someone Better Than You
|
Recently I have enjoyed a book called Work Rules!: Insights From Inside Google by Laszlo Bock. The author works in People Operations, similar to Human Resources, where he has helped to hire the best of the best for Google in its early years. There were many lessons that I learned and reinforced, but my one takeaway was "hire someone better than you" and don't compromise quality.
As I'm interviewing to hire a replacement for my amazing assistant (Ammara Kimso), I'm reviewing my own weaknesses. What can this applicant bring to the table that I'm missing? Or better yet, what quality should I look for that I lack time to cultivate in myself? And what qualities does this applicant possess that can help transform them into a great leader and innovator in their own right?
Creativity. There are many things about the administrative assistant position that I miss, but creativity is a big one! I had the freedom to create fun flyers promoting our local businesses and events. I partnered with local non-profits to use my creativity to spread the word about their activities. Design was something that I was passionate about. It proved to be an easy transition when I started as the new administrative assistant last year. I discovered in January that Ammara reflected a quick, inventive skill set that made her the perfect fit as my replacement. I had less time to guide creativity in my new hire, so Ammara was a rare gem.
Hopefully soon I'll be able to announce the next diamond (without the rough); someone with a shining personality, spectacular creativity, and the potential to grow in our great city. I have high aspirations for this unnamed individual. The reason is because I'm planning to hire someone better than me!
Until Next week,
Christine Hoenigmann

| Reach Out supporter and local artist Peter Rohrback (l) with Stephen Hill service director for I-10 Toyota Scion with the custom mailbox hand carved by Rohrback as a show of appreciation for his help. |
 |
Reach Out Morongo Basin recently received a helping hand from I-10 Toyota Scion in Indio when they had mechanical problems with one of their vans used to transport senior and disabled neighbors to doctors appointments and shopping.
"Almost two years ago a local couple in Twentynine Palms donated an older Toyota Van to us for our transportation program" said Robin Schlosser Reach Out executive director. "Though the van was almost 25 years old it was in good condition with low miles and was perfect for our local runs in the Morongo Basin. In the year and a half we used it we drove almost 10,000 miles with it, mostly on local roads though occasionally down the hill. All went well till late in 2015 when we had some mechanical problems with it and after getting quotes for repairs ranging from $1800 to $2400 we had to park it and try to raise the funds for repairs."
At Reach Out's Art Auction fundraiser in May of this year at ArtFx & Furnishings in Yucca Valley Reach Out director and staff met Peter Rohrback a local artist who specializes in hand carved woodwork and who donated some work to the event to help raise funds for the organization.
"When we got to I-10 Toyota I could see our little van all shiny and clean sitting in the lot by the service department. They treated our vehicle just like they would a brand new one" stated Schlosser. "When Mr. Hill and Mr. Ayala came out to greet us they were presented with their art pieces generously donated by Mr. Rohrback and Mr. Hill handed me the keys to our van. He told me they fixed our mechanical problems and went through the van and made other repairs that they felt were necessary and all this was done at no cost. We are so appreciative of the help they gave us because it truly makes a world of difference to our small organization in our ministry to help our senior and disabled neighbors."
