Message from the Principal | |
Greetings Hilltop Families,
I am excited about our third graders having the opportunity to engage in our music program. They have spent the first semester gaining knowledge about music theory and an understanding of various instruments. As we move into the next semester, students will get to experience each instrument live to make the best selection. Scroll down for more information about this exciting program.
Additionally, I want to remind our school community to look out for one another during this cold season. Please check on your elderly neighbors. The frigid temperatures, snow, and ice make for dangerous conditions. We want to make sure we are all safe and cared for, especially our elders.
Have a wonderful weekend, and enjoy the snow!
Educationally Yours,
Dr. Octavia Reid
Hilltop Principal

Third-Grade Instrument Choice
In the coming two weeks, all third graders will explore musical instrument families during their Unified Arts music classes with Mrs. Chapman and Mrs. DeViney. A special highlight is the instrument demonstration, featuring high school faculty Dave Luddington and Allison Siekmann. This exciting presentation will allow students to experience each instrument live.
During the week of January 22, students will have the opportunity to try out instruments that spark their interest. This experience is designed to help them make an informed choice about which instrument they'd like to pursue. They will be sent home with their instrument selection and be placed in the appropriate instrumental class.
To facilitate a smooth start, families are requested to arrange for instrument rentals by February 8. We will provide comprehensive information regarding rental companies, instrument sizing, and other essential details to ensure a successful beginning in their musical journey.

The meeting begins with a roll call, during which each house presents its respective chant. We encourage all parents in attendance to participate in our house roll call. Due to limited space, each housemate may only have one guest.

Classroom Spotlight: Mrs. Dudas
Students in Mrs. Dudas’ English Language Arts class are learning fiction signposts through self-directed learning. The "Notice and Note" signposts are a set of reading comprehension strategies introduced by Kylene Beers and Robert E. Probst in their book "Notice and Note: Strategies for Close Reading." These six fiction signposts are designed to help readers identify and analyze key moments in fiction texts. During class, the students utilized instructional videos to independently grasp each signpost. Then the students navigated through picture books to apply their understanding of contrasts and contradictions, “Aha moments,” tough questions, words of the wiser, again and again, and memory moments.
