DVAR TORAH - Thoughts from the Principal & Educational Director
|
The Talmud in Masechet Shabbat (21b) cites a famous dispute between Beit Hillel and Beit Shammai regarding the preferred way of lighting the chanukiah on Chanukah. Beit Shammai believed that we should light eight candles on the first night and one less candle on each additional night. Beit Hillel is of the opinion that we light one candle on the first night and add an additional candle on each subsequent night. Beit Hillel's opinion seems far more logical based on the general idea that we try to always "go up" in holiness, but why does Beit Shammai believe that we should start with eight candles and work our way down to one?
One answer given for Beit Shammai's ruling is that Beit Shammai models the Chanukah candles after the bull sacrifices that were brought as part of the Musaf service on Sukkot. Over Sukkot, the number of bull offerings decreases from thirteen on the first day to seven on the last. However, this theory still does not explain the connection between Chunukah and Sukkot. What does the lighting of the Menorah have to do with the bull sacrifice of Sukkot?
Rav Mayer Twersky suggests that both holidays feature an extension of the kedusha, or sanctity, of the Beit HaMikdash. He explains that when we build our sukkah, we bring the sanctity of the Beit HaMikdash into our private property. So too, the when we light the candles on our chanukiot, we bring the kedusha of the light of the Menorah into our home.
The Chanukah story is characterized by a strong emphasis on the Beit HaMikdash. The Seleucid persecution, which was not limited to destruction of the Temple, was seen as reaching its peak with the defilement of the Mikdash, and the victory celebration after the war was similarly focused upon the rededication of the Beit HaMikdash and a renewal of its rituals. The Sages, however, wisely insisted that the commemoration of this victory take place in every Jewish home across the world. They perhaps sought to emphasize that, despite the importance of the Mikdash's purification, our nation's victory over the Hellenist campaign must find expression in our homes and in our everyday lives. As we celebrate the rededication of the Temple, we demonstrate that the kedusha of the Beit HaMikdash is practically relevant and applicable even in the privacy of our homes, in our own personal lives.
Shabbat Shalom and Happy Chanukah!

Welcome to our life hacks section! Life hacks are easy strategies or techniques that you probably never thought of that can be used to "hack" every day problems--or manage your time and daily activities in a more efficient way. Some hacks are so useful that they come in handy every day, so we thought it would be fun for the Hillel family to share our favorite hacks with each other!
THIS WEEK'S HACK was suggested by Ms. Myers--thanks!
To open a tough jar or bottle lid, either put a rubber band around the cap or use rubber washing gloves to give yourself a good grip! Works every time!

What better way to experience Chanukah than with our first ever Chanukabration. Preschoolers had the opportunity to explore and create while using their five senses in centers set up in the lunchroom, while the second floor was set up for the older grades. Upstairs, students made candles, played laser tag, created Chanukah cards, and enjoyed a Chanukah themed scooter course.
