Dear Parents,

Mardi Gras is finally here, and we're about to enter into New Orleans' unique and alternative universe. It’s a time for the community to come together to celebrate, enjoy parades, music, floats, food, and costumes. I especially love the sound of the tubas as they move past in each marching band!

However, if you're not from here and have never experienced the Carnival season, it can feel strange and even concerning for your student to be fully immersed in a multi-day, city-wide celebration. The best advice we give students is safety first, and to practice common sense: stay in large groups, keep your wits about you and your phone fully charged, and remain aware of your surroundings at all times. Tulane has some helpful Mardi Gras safety tips, that you can pass along to your student. Lastly, take a look at our newsletter below for a snapshot of all things Tulane Hillel. Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Happy Mardi Gras,

Ron Gubitz

Executive Director

Jewish Heritage Night

Hillel's 2nd annual Jewish Heritage night took place on Tuesday, February 7th. There, we honored Rabbi David Goldstein, who's been teaching in Tulane's Jewish Studies Department for over 40 years, and is the Rabbi Emeritus at Touro Synagogue in uptown New Orleans. Students came out to support Rabbi Goldstein, cheer on the Men's Basketball Team, celebrate Jewish community, and of course, grab some free swag and food. To top it off, the night ended with an incredible win for Tulane against Cincinnati!

Ashager Araro: Israeli-Ethiopian Activist

Last week, Tulane Hillel partnered with StandwithUs and the Tulane Black Student Union, to welcome Ashager Araro, an Ethiopian Jewish activist and influencer, for an important talk on the intersectionality of being a Black, Jewish, and Zionist woman. Araro discussed the history of Ethiopian Jews and her experience coming to Israel. Students enjoyed a delicious meal from Cafe Abyssinia, a local Ethiopian restaurant, and engaged in a meaningful conversation.

Mardi Gras Clothing Swap

Students joined us last week for our annual Mardi Gras Swap Shop! After collecting clothes and costumes, students came to the Mintz Center and "shopped" sustainably for their Carnival costumes. Students hung out, sampled delicious king cakes from across the city, and everyone left with something "new" for their restocked closets.

Tu Bishvat Urban Gardening

In observance and celebration of Tu Bishvat - the birthday of trees - students joined in a "Worship in Action" urban gardening experience at Okra Abbey. Volunteers included Tulane Hillel students in partnership with NOLA Wesley and Dillard University students.

Jewish Learning Fellowship

We recently kicked off our Jewish Learning Fellowship (JLF), a 10-session, conversation-based opportunity for students to learn together as a community. During our first session, fellows engaged in powerful conversations about Judaism and set expectations for the space that JLF creates.

Kayaking on Bayou St. John

Earlier this month, students joined us in a quintessential New Orleans activity as they paddled down Bayou St. John in the Mid City neighborhood! This was a part of our Burst the Bubble series, where students join us for different activities off campus and throughout the city.

Alternate Winter Break Trip

In January, Tulane Hillel took 12 students on an alternative winter break trip to Urban Adamah, a Jewish urban farm in Berkeley, CA. This experience provided a rejuvenating, heart-opening, and mind-expanding trip where students explored their Judaism and sustainable practices.
