Celebrating Excellence: Award Presentations

Tracy Barill, Director of Education, announced the 2023-2024 Durham Catholic District School Board Award of Merit Recipient. Congratulations to Carrie Colligan, teacher at St. Anne Catholic School.
Director Barill shared highlights from Carrie's nomination form at the Regular Board Meeting. Inspired by her son Mikey, who was born with Down Syndrome, Carrie has been on the board of directors for the Durham Down Syndrome Association for six years. As a parent, when Carrie saw the lack of resources and inclusive opportunities available for those with intellectual and physical disabilities, she took it as a call to serve. She works tirelessly every day to make the world a more inclusive place.
Carrie is an outstanding member of the board, organizing and running many meaningful events that bring together the Down Syndrome community and help to ensure that individuals with Down Syndrome are embraced with dignity and respect. This includes organizing monthly Youth Hangouts which help teenagers and young adults with Down Syndrome to work on social skills while developing meaningful friendships.
Carrie's dedication to making the world a more inclusive place is a testament to her faith. She consistently goes above and beyond, tirelessly seeking out resources and innovative approaches to ensure everyone can enjoy the same opportunities.
Carrie applies the same level of dedication to her work at Durham Catholic. As a Curriculum Coverage Teacher, she uses her God-given gifts and talents to enrich the curriculum for her students by infusing her passion for music and love of Christ into her lessons. Her passion for music serves as a beacon of joy and inspiration, creating harmonious connections that transcend barriers and celebrate the beauty of diversity.
Carrie is a devoted mother and teacher whose unwavering love, devotion to her faith, and tireless advocacy have enriched the lives of individuals with Down Syndrome, their families and the entire community. She exemplifies the values of compassion, inclusivity, and empowerment.

Catholic Identity and Pastoral Planning
|
Ms. Stevenson, Superintendent of Education, shared an update on pastoral planning developments over the school year. In the 2023-2024 school year, the DCDSB Pastoral Plan set goals for each of the five key elements of Catholic identity, as identified in the Pastoral Planning Reference Document (draft August 2023). Each elementary and secondary school completed a School Pastoral Plan using the new template in the reference document.
Superintendent Stevenson said pastoral planning serves as a spiritual roadmap for our journey as a Catholic Christian community. It provides opportunity to consider what our key priorities as a faith community should be so that we can effectively work together, focus our efforts, and have a way of assessing how we are doing. Superintendent Stevenson shared that the DCDSB has adopted a three-year pastoral plan using the five key elements of Catholic identity as the guiding framework. It is the intention that the Board Pastoral Plan will guide the system from an awareness and understanding of the five key elements of Catholic identity to a lived expression of faith in action that guides all processes.
Superintendent Stevenson said the 2023-2024 school year was the first year of implementation of the draft pastoral planning template, developed as part of the Pastoral Planning Reference Document. Next steps will include providing an overview to administrators of other trends and observations identified in the school pastoral plans and questions for consideration.
The Faith Formation Department will provide school administrators dedicated time to reflect upon this first year of implementation and to collaborate to suggest improvements and additional system-level supports prior to the 2024-2025 pastoral planning cycle.

Tracy Barill, Director of Education, submitted a written report for the May 27, 2024, Regular Board Meeting.
System Events
- Throughout the month of May, we have been recognizing the following religious observances and cultural/employee appreciation celebrations:
- Month of the Blessed Virgin Mary
- Speech and Hearing Month
- Asian and South Asian Heritage Month
- Jewish Heritage Month
- During the week of May 6-10, Indigenous students in Grades 3-5 gathered at the Pope Francis Centre to participate in an Indigenous Student Day. The Indigenous Education Team and Indigenous community partners including Beedahbin Peltier, Kylie Fox-Peltier, Zika'ige Peltier and Robert Cutting, led the students in groups to learn on the land, make beaded bracelets, participate in traditional storytelling, and learn more about Indigenous culture.
- On Thursday, May 9, secondary students were invited to attend the Secondary Student Mental Health Leadership Summit. Grade 9-11 students represented their schools and participated in activities surrounding mental health and provided feedback to raise awareness about mental health. This collection of ideas at the student summit helped create a secondary student-led mental health leadership group called B Well.
- On Monday, May 13, 600 elementary students across the Durham Catholic District School Board and Durham District School Board gathered together in person at the Ontario Tech University and Durham College Wellness Centre for the Forest of Reading Celebration. This is the first time in five years that the students were able to be together in person for this exciting day to share their passion for books and reading, and to present awards to their favourite authors.
Upcoming/Ongoing
- June 7 is the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Sacred Heart is a sign of the love of Jesus, which we are invited to imitate. Throughout June, we remember that in the Scared Heart of Jesus, we see a love for our heavenly Father that also moves outward in this world to the love of neighbour. As a Catholic learning community, let us all remember that the devotion to the Sacred Heart is a way for each of us to intensely encounter Jesus in practices of prayer.
- June is National Indigenous History Month. Throughout the entire year, we are committed to ongoing learning, relationship-building, and the National Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. We continue to enhance relationships with Indigenous community partners and local Indigenous communities. Resources for further learning are available year-round to our staff, students and families, on our website at dcdsb.ca/IndigenousEducation.
- On June 4, we look forward to hosting the third annual Indigenous student graduation celebration where, together with their families and the Indigenous Education Circle, we will celebrate Indigenous students graduating from Grade 8 and Grade 12.
- As Catholics, we are called to love one another. We believe every human being is created in the image and likeness of God and should always be treated with dignity, compassion and respect. During the month of June, and all year long, we support and acknowledge students, family, staff and community members who identify as 2SLGBTQ+. Throughout the month of June, our Durham Catholic learning community will recognize Pride Month, and will raise the rainbow flag at our schools and offices. We recognize that we have a responsibility to lead and inspire hearts that are committed to inclusive, safe and accepting schools for all. A focus on mental health, well-being, and a sense of belonging are essential to our ongoing commitment to ensuring that our Catholic schools are safe places for everyone.
- It is important to note that each of our Catholic secondary schools has a GSA group dedicated to providing peer support. Students interested in joining can speak with their teacher, Guidance Counsellor, Chaplain or Principal for more information. We want all of our students to know that they are never alone.

I would like to offer my special thanks to the organizing committee for their efforts in commemorating the history and ongoing presence of this vibrant Catholic learning community in Ajax. We thank and congratulate the efforts of St. Teresa of Calcutta’s Principal, Mrs. Sheena Paul, members of school staff, the dedicated 25th Anniversary planning committee and School Council. On May 16, the Durham Catholic Children’s Foundation hosted its 10th Annual Gala honouring Bishop Vincent Nguyen and our Distinguished Catholic Alumni Award recipients. I want to thank the members of the foundation’s Board of Directors for their efforts, as well as our sponsors, donors, partners and guests for their generosity and support of the students in our Durham Catholic community.

This funding will provide a new Catholic elementary school in north Oshawa and will also provide a six-classroom addition to St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic School in Oshawa. This investment will support the creation of 760 student spaces. We are grateful to the Province of Ontario and the Ministry of Education for this investment in the DCDSB.
