We would like to thank everyone who braved the weather to attend the City of Palm Coast's Fire Department's 22nd Anniversary Remembrance Ceremony of the 9/11 attacks. This is an emotional time for all as we remember those who lost their lives but also a time for us to reflect and come together as a community as we did on that tragic day. For those who could not attend, please see live video coverage below.

Nearly 1 Ton of Trash Collected

On Saturday, September 9th, the City of Palm Coast hosted its 16th Annual Intracoastal Waterway Cleanup event with soaring results! Since 2008, volunteers participating in the event have collected over 27,000 pounds of trash. This year, over 190 volunteers participated in the event and recovered over 1,800 pounds of trash! At the close of the event, volunteers were rewarded with prizes for the individual who collected the most trash, the group that collected the most trash, and the most unique trash F.I.N.D. The winners of the Individual Most Trash Collected were Christopher and Sophia Harrison, who collected an impressive 80 lbs. The Group Most Trash Collected award went to Girl Scout Troop 2413, who collected over 1,100 pounds of trash. Lastly, Palm Coast resident Karolyn Whitney received the award for Most Unique F.I.N.D. for recovering a vintage telephone line concrete marker.

Just this week, the U.S. Department of Justice, on behalf of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), resolved a lengthy court battle covering over 1,000 pesticide products. In 2011, the Center for Biological Diversity and Pesticide Action Network filed a complaint in Federal Court in California against EPA, alleging that it was violating the Endangered Species Act (ESA) when it registered or reevaluated the registration of certain pesticide active ingredients.

It is difficult when using pesticides to single out just one type of insect. So often, the spray can hurt a lot more than just that one bug. The Center for Biological Diversity even thinks that some salmon and mussel populations could bounce back as pesticides can contaminate nearby waters.

“This agreement is a win-win-win to protect endangered species, ensure the availability of pesticides needed to grow food across America, and save considerable time and taxpayer expenses required to further litigate this case,” said Assistant Administrator for EPA’s Office of Chemical Safety and Pollution Prevention Michal Freedhoff.
