HBCU Internship Program
Pay Range: $16.00 - $20.00 Hourly

In partnership with North Carolina’s HBCUs and MIHEs, this 10-week internship will provide students with valuable real-world experience in STEM careers and the opportunities to learn about careers in the public sector. Essential components of the program include professional development, leadership training and networking opportunities. Explore the three positions available for students this summer here!

Eligibility Requirements:
  • Applicant must have a 2.5 GPA or higher
  • Must be a current student continuing their education in the Fall 23 or a recent graduate (Dec. 22 or May 23)
  • Must be a current student attending a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) or a Minority Institution of Higher Education (MIHE) in the state of North Carolina or be a Resident of North Carolina and attend an HBCU/MIHE in another State
Youth Service Behavioral Specialist - Virtual Hiring Event
Recruitment Range: $30,915 - $54,101

Location: Granville County, NC
The Youth Service Behavioral Specialist position provides supervision, care, counseling, safety and support to youth who are in the physical custody of the Division. Implements individual and group treatment plans to effect behavioral changes required for youthful offender rehabilitation while providing security, controlling and maintaining custody and safeguarding juveniles from each other. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
  • Documented experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of staff
  • Documented experience organizing and preparing accurate records, charts, and reports and analyzing such information
  • Documented experience communicating effectively in oral and written form

Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor's degree in a related human services field, such as Criminal Justice, Sociology, Education, Religion or similar subjects shall include 25 semester hours of coursework related to the human services field.

Revenue Field Auditor I
Recruitment Range: $55,518 - $86,748
Application Deadline: Continuous
Location: Statewide
The primary purpose of a Revenue Field Auditor I is to conduct independent examinations of financial records of taxpayers that have unique or special audit features or anticipated accounting, tax law, or investigative problems. This position involves regular travel to taxpayer locations within an assigned territory and limited overnight travel. Access to reliable transportation and a valid driver's license is required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
  • Basic knowledge of the Internal Revenue Code and State Tax Laws across multiple schedules
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Basic knowledge of auditing and accounting principles and practices
  • Effective analytical skills that would be helpful with investigation of complex tax compliance issues 

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Economics, Accounting or related field with at least eighteen semester hours of accounting from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Do you know a state employee who is a recent college graduate and loves their career?
Darcy Dean
Clinical Dietician
Darcy Dean graduated summa cum laude from Western Carolina in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics and then earned a Master of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics from Appalachian State University in 2022.

As a clinical dietician at Broughton Psychiatric Hospital, Darcy loves that her job incorporates aspects of her nutrition degrees, both clinical and food service. She provides individualized nutrition services to meet the dietary needs of patients across a spectrum of health conditions. She also provides nutrition education to patients that they can apply when they leave the facility to benefit their health outside of the hospital setting.

Besides the work and benefits of the position, Darcy enjoys the community among state employees. She participated in a walking challenge this fall, where she joined a team in her office to compete against other employees across the state to promote health, wellness and active living.
