The stakes have never been higher

By now, most school leaders have their budget totals for next year. And as always, it never seems like enough. We've created a tool to help school leadership teams consider choices and trade-offs. Budget Hold'em for Schools guides conversations around the cost of various strategies such as reducing class size, providing tutoring, or adding a literacy coach - as well as their probable impact on student outcomes. This interactive exercise is a school-level version of Budget Hold'em for Districts that can be played online individually or with a group.

Getting better return-on-investment with limited district resources

Last week ERS' Nisha Garg joined Schoolzilla, a data analytics company, for a webinar to discuss how districts can use data strategically to find out if their resources align with their priorities. Garg shared two case studies where district leaders measured such data as class size, instructional time, and number of students per teacher to determine how to reallocate people, time, and money to better meet students' needs.

How school districts and states can advance equity and excellence under ESSA

When it comes to school funding, it not only matters how well districts use it - but how much they have. Under ESSA, school districts must publicly report actual per-pupil expenditures at the school level. This vital task can help states and districts ensure they distribute resources equitably. It's also quite complicated; done poorly, this reporting could create more confusion than clarity. With Chiefs for Change, we created a brief to provide district and state leaders with the steps to make financial transparency a springboard for real equity and better student outcomes.

Karen Miles, Karen Baroody in The Hechinger Report

With the Trump administration's focus on school choice, there is a risk that system-level reform will get lost in the conversation. In our commentary in The Hechinger Report, we explore why education leaders must double down on redesigning school systems. Showcasing Denver Public Schools and Lawrence Public Schools, we share how these systems are reorganizing resources and changing the rules to support struggling schools.

WHY NOW?
Because our children deserve more than a few great schools.

Ensuring college and career readiness for all students, especially lower-income students and students of color, requires redesigning school systems to enable new ways of organizing schools for student and teacher learning. School System 20/20 is our vision for transforming school systems so every school succeeds for every student, because of the system - not in spite of it.
