Hello Erin,
New beginnings are happening in the Metropolitan Education District (MetroED). The 2024-2025 school year has kicked off, and I am both honored and excited to connect with you through my first newsletter message as MetroED’s Superintendent. I look forward to meeting people and becoming engaged in our community.
This summer at MetroED, nearly 100 incoming ninth through 12-grade students and 20 adventurous students from across the globe participated in our CTE Summer Exploration Program at Silicon Valley Career Technical Education (SVCTE). Summer learning was in full swing at Silicon Valley Adult Education (SVAE) as well. We would also like to acknowledge and celebrate the hard work and dedication of our students as they competed in Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) national competitions. You can read about all this and more in this newsletter.
With summer behind us, I’m excited for the upcoming year. There will surely be many success stories to share, recognizing that it's all made possible by the hard work and dedication of the MetroED team!

CTE Summer Exploration Shapes Future Pros | |
|
Ninety-one incoming ninth through 12th-grade students soaked up an educational journey of growth and discovery for four weeks during SVCTE's Summer Exploration Program.
The “career exploration” provided five general elective credits from courses that included Fashion Design & Textile Art, Sports Medicine & Kinesiology, Veterinary Science, Medical Assisting, Fire Science/First Responder, and Mobile Apps & Web Development. Students had the chance to rotate through the week-long career technical education courses to help them discover their interests.
“Participating in the CTE Summer Exploration Program is an invaluable way for students to spend their summer,” said Kiran Grewal, MetroED Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. “Summer learning is crucial, as it keeps students engaged and prepares them for the opportunities ahead. The program also allows them to explore various career pathways, gaining insights and skills to shape their future. Additionally, it provides an opportunity for students to tour the SVCTE campus, discover the options available to them as sophomores, juniors and seniors, and get acquainted with the environment.”

"Silicon Valley Adult Education is an excellent opportunity for me, offering English classes for free," said summer school student Julieta Cabrera.
In the Advanced Writing English as a Second Language course led by teacher Saila Naher, Julieta and her classmates (pictured) worked on learning grammar, punctuation, and paragraph rules. Using the book "Writing in English: Step by Step," they did various writing exercises and made daily improvements.
"Every day we’re learning something," Julieta shared. "When I go to the store or speak with the neighborhood or my friends, I understand more and more. I appreciate this school and all the teachers."
