LAST LYCHEE HARVEST!
This is IT, folks! Tomorrow morning we're harvesting the last lychees of the season from our neighbor's pesticide-free grove. They're a mix of Sweetheart and Mauritius lychees (and no, sorry, we can't sort them out) and are tasting awesome. So stock up while you have the chance. Lychees are so unpredictable - they might produce again next year, or skip 3, 5, or even 10 years, and we don't really know exactly why this happens.
Did you know? Lychees freeze really well - NO peeling or cutting required - and make THE best mini-popsicles on a super hot day. Just take some out of the freezer, wait a couple of minutes, then gently bite off the top half of the skin). remove the cap, and you have a perfect little lychee cup of frozen deliciousness.
Ciruela (aka Jocote) - Here Today, Gone Tomorrow.
This delicious fruit is also known as red mombin, hog plum, and probably another half-dozen names. It's a member of the cashew family, with an extremely juicy fruit and a big seed inside. This is one of very few truly deciduous tropical trees. The fruits start to form while the tree is leafless, but by the time they start to size up and ripen, they're in full leaf. And once you see the first ripe fruit, get ready to check them multiple times a day, as you can practically see the fruit ripening in front of your eyes. Enjoy them while you can, because you'll blink, and they'll be done! When placing your order, let us know if you prefer green, ripe, or a mix.
Mango Madness
We're now officially in mango season. Our Haden mangoes are ready to eat immediately. You will also find varieties like Choc anon, Val Carrie, Angie, Zill, Glenn, Kent, and "Asian ripe" Nam Doc Mai (slightly underipe, as traditionally eaten in Southeast Asia) joining our Grower's Choice Mix this week, The bigger the box, the more varieties we get to include!
Did you know? You can peel cut ripe mango into chunks or slices and freeze for later use. When ready to use, let it thaw out a bit - just enough to handle it - then blend it by itself or add a piece of banana to make a simple frozen smoothie.
Our Green Mango Box is for folks who love the tartness of immature mango. These mangoes will NEVER ripen properly, so don't buy them thinking you'll store them to ripen up later. They're perfect for making mango salsa, pickle, or chutney, cooking pork, chicken, or fish, or simply cut into chunks for dipping into (pick one or more of the following): salt, sugar, lime juice, a hot chili sauce, Tajin (I prefer the dried version). This week a green mango box will likely include Glenn, Graham, Kent, and Keitt
You can now also pre-order some of the popular late mango varieties to secure yours for pickup later on when they ripen.
We're harvesting early in the morning. Don't dilly-dally... get your orders in TONIGHT (Tuesday 6/6) so we'll be sure to harvest enough for everyone.
