A Division of Canine Home Exercises

I've Missed You!

Hi rehab friends and colleagues! How ARE you? I've been busy following inspiration. In the fall of 2021 I was moved to go next level at every level. This year I committed to hosting monthly dinner parties (highly recommended!), a two-week family holiday, and a trip to Maine with friends. As I write this, I'm on a mini summer sabbatical. Ahhhh...change is great!

I'm super excited to share with you one of the professional next level projects - the rebranding of Canine Home Exercises to GoGoCharlie PT Home Programs for Pets. CHE was a pilot program that became successful so it was time to make it what YOU really need to improve your clinic practice. It now has more than 700 multi-species exercises and 100 pre-poulated templates.

Along with the content improvement in GoGoCharlie, you asked for this newly formatted newsletter including Exercise of the Month. Knowing when to prescribe which exercises can feel daunting at times, particularly when trying to remember which muscle contraction is best suited for which phases of recovery. The purpose of this new format is to simplify this for you.

Just like always, this content is for you. Let me know if it's meeting your needs. If not, please email me directly with what you would like to see. If you aren't interested, simply unsubscribe at the bottom of this newsletter.

And, of course, if you haven't yet subscribed to GoGoCharlie, I have a fantastic offer for you. A two-week free trial followed by an almost 50% discount promotional offer for the first three months (new subscribers only).

EXERCISE OF THE MONTH

Gracilis Modified Stretch

Gracilis Modified Stretch

Treatment sequencing for muscle hypomobility is different than treatment sequencing for joint hypomobility. For muscle hypomobility diagnoses such as gracilis fibrotic myopathy, biceps brachii tenosynovitis with chronic changes, and quadriceps contractures, the muscle shortening is the primary function limiting clinical sign. The goal is to improve muscle length to allow for PROM or AROM followed by strengthening. This may all happen within one treatment and/or over the treatment course. Naturally, evidence-based modalities such as continuous wave ultrasound can be applied to prime the tissues followed by manual therapies. One of the manual therapies that can be sent home with clients is GRACILIS MODIFIED STRETCH. Along with manual therapies, eccentric closed-chain hamstring muscle group exercises may be completed. To find these exercises, in the search bar type ECCENTRIC HAMSTRINGS.

Gracilis Modified Stretch

Position the hind limb away from the midline of the body (abduct). With the the other hand, gently hold the muscles of the upper inner thigh (the gracilis). Maintaining the grasp, push the muscle fibers upward. Hold. Release. Move down the limb about three inches. Repeat.

To conceptualize the modified stretch, imagine muscle is like a rubber band. In a traditional stretch, one end of the rubber band is held while the other end is pulled. In a modified stretch, the rubber band is held taught (not tight) while pressure is applied to the middle of the band. Modified stretches are most commonly used with muscle injuries, painful muscles, and geriatric muscles.
