Share the road during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

May is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month which reminds us that riders, drivers and other travelers share responsibility for reducing crashes.

Motorcyclists are more likely than drivers to die or be injured in motor vehicle crashes. Speed, alcohol and helmet use are major contributing factors in these crashes.

Drivers also have a role in keeping motorcyclists safe. Due to their size, motorcycles are harder to see and it’s also harder to judge their speed and distance. All drivers – including motorcyclists – should always check blind spots and use signals when changing lanes or turning. Give motorcyclists the full width of the lane and allow more following distance when behind a motorcycle.

Additional safety tips for drivers and motorcycle riders:

  • Always obey the speed limit.
  • Never drive under the influence.
  • Yield to motorcyclists, especially at intersections.
  • Wear high-visibility protective gear and DOT-compliant motorcycle helmets.
  • Complete a rider education and training course.
