Pedestrian, school bus and teen driver safety awareness

Transportation safety is top of mind during October with overlapping awareness events for pedestrian, school bus and teen driver safety.


Pedestrian Safety Month

October 


Pedestrian Safety Month improves awareness to reduce crashes involving pedestrians. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrians died in traffic crashes every 81 minutes in 2020. As part of Pedestrian Safety Month, you can get tips to improve safety as a driver and walking.


National School Bus Safety Week

Oct. 17-21


More than 25 million children ride a school bus every day, according to the National Association for Pupil Transportation. National School Bus Safety Week reminds us about the importance of protecting our students. Practices for keeping students safe at the bus stop are available.


National Teen Driver Safety Week

Oct. 16-22


This week reminds parents to talk with their teen drivers about good behaviors behind the wheel. The NHTSA has shared rules about the biggest dangers for teen drivers.

Comment Opportunities

Comment on travel improvements to help people get where they need to go more safely and reliably. What types of investments are most important for greater Portland’s sidewalks, bikeways, roads and transit? Take the survey to help update Metro's 2023 Regional Transportation Plan through Oct. 17.

Learn about TriMet's Forward Together Draft Service Concept, which is focused on ridership and improving connections to destinations for people with low and limited incomes. Attend an open house or take the survey through Oct. 31.

  • Barnes Road and Cedar Hills Boulevard intersection; traffic signal shutdown, 7 p.m.-5 a.m. Oct. 17-19 for construction


  • Marsh Road at milepost 0.3; daytime lane closure, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 16-Nov. 4 for culvert replacement
