Meet the 2022 STAT Wunderkinds

STAT set out to celebrate the unheralded heroes of science and medicine, poring over hundreds of nominations from across North America in search for the next generation of scientific superstars. We were on the hunt for the most impressive doctors and researchers on the cusp of launching their careers, but not yet fully independent.

This year, as in past years, we’ve found inspiring stories and innovative research. All are blazing new trails as they attempt to answer some of the biggest questions in science and medicine.

...Founder of the Harvard Global Orthopaedics Collaborative. He and his colleagues travel around the world to help countries improve their basic systems of musculoskeletal care by training more surgeons, supporting local doctors, and persuading government officials to make investments.

UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN

...set up his own lab at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, the goal is to pair that technology with software that allows for virtual drug design to create a chemical a la carte menu for researchers.

CELLARITY

...co-founded Open Problems in Single-Cell Analysis, an international consortium of researchers developing a centralized, open-source framework for the evaluation of single-cell algorithms.
