THE MID-WEEK BUZZ

Happy Thursday Dear Church!

What a week it has been. I do not know about you, but I found myself watching too much TV news, trying to keep up with all of the protests and police action around our country’s major university campuses. Being a pastor in the United Church of Christ, you run across many people of deep faith who find themselves in situations not unlike the protests this week. The passion for justice felt by many UCC clergy has landed them in situations of great testimony, while protesting everything from nuclear war and the crisis at the border to health care for all and reproductive rights. I have several very close colleagues who have been arrested in efforts to expand the conversation on many social situations. I am grateful for their witness. I, for one, am not quite that “out there.” I guess if I were to be honest, I wish I was a bit more of a “front liner.” But as I was watching the unrest this week, it seemed different. The passion, the anger, the unrest, and the resulting violence hurt my heart. I have been pretty open about my feelings of the Israel/Palestine conflict. I hurt and am concerned for everyone. I pray for all effected by this war. But especially, I pray for an end to the fighting that has killed over 37,000 men, women, and children in Palestine. I want to encourage all of you to pray for those in this conflict, knowing that it is more than okay to have empathy for all sides. As I mentioned on Sunday, if we say we love Jesus … then we need to be ready to do something about it. Jesus, was both Palestinian and Jewish. There simply must be a way to end the suffering, to end the war. Let us pray to that end.

This coming Sunday is going to be EXTRA special. We have the honor of witnessing the baptism of an incredible human, Elnaz Yousefi, who has worshiped with us for over 6 months. Elnaz is an amazing human who also happens to have been brought up in a strict Muslim household in Iran. I mean … can you see the gravity of celebrating her baptism this week? I can hardly wait. Please, please, please, come and support this amazing woman as she follows Jesus into the waters of baptism and connects herself to the heart of who we are at CCP.

Until Sunday, I encourage you to think about your own baptism. The promises made in the presence of the Spirit, are promises that never lose their power on our lives. I love being your pastor.

Holding you close and lifting you high!

Artist Spotlight – Maverick City Music

For this month’s artist spotlight, I want to highlight Maverick City Music. They are a music collective of some high-profile worship leaders in the United States and have been pumping out music the last five years. One of my favorite things about Maverick City is that it puts out a diversity of music both in theme and in style often leaning toward a little more of a gospel music flavor. We actually did one of their songs last week to preface the sermon called “I Thank God.” Some of my other favorite songs include “Promises,” Firm Foundation,” and “Rest On Us.” They are the kind of band that whenever they put out something new, I have to listen to it to try to find that new gem of a song.

I encourage you to spend some time listening to Maverick City Music this month and I know you’ll be blessed. Take a listen by clicking “here.”

New! Our May Basket of Hope!

Greetings from the Outreach Ministry,

We have an amazing opportunity to help the young people of our community! For the next two months, our Basket of Hope, will be filled with our gifts to benefit the Abraxas school “Safe Center Pantry” here in Poway.

Abraxas serves the children of Poway, as an alternative education option for students working through life challenges while earning their diploma. Students that receive a free lunch on campus, for some this may be their only source of a complete and nutritious meal. At this time, 13% of their students are facing housing instability, and working through other life challenges. They are able to find support at Abraxas so that they could better focus on their academics.

Abraxas is a year-round school, in session, every nine weeks after which there is a three week break. During the breaks no lunch is provided, so many of the teens are happy to get the extra support they need from the Safe Center Pantry at Abraxas. The pantry is able to send them home with the nutrition they need.

Together, we can help replenish the pantry and get it ready for the needs of the children during the break. Please prayerfully consider how you can help these amazing students at Abraxas.

The grocery wish list is for

Shelf stable milk - boxed cereal- instant oatmeal-cornbread mix-pasta or spaghetti-pasta sauce-canned protein, Chicken, tuna, roast beef or low sodium spam-canned soup-canned vegetables and easily prepared shelf staples microwave items.

They also have a gift card wish list for

Stater Brothers-Walmart-Aldi-Albertsons/Vons-Target-Ralph’s or Arco gas cards. They would also welcome gift cards for local fast food places for a hot meal.

If you are able, please pick something from the wish list and bring to place in the Basket of Hope!!!

Thank you in advance for your generosity and for sharing your gifts with others. Big Blessings and Big Hugs

The Outreach Ministry

Hello from Outreach!

All are welcome to join the Board of Outreach! We meet the first Thursday of each month at 5:00 pm in the Fireside room and on Zoom. Contact Linda England at LindaDEngland@gmail.com or 858-748-3304 if you are interested in getting involved.

Outreach brings forth local and global service projects, from fundraising for medical supplies in war-torn areas, to gathering and assembling supplies for our unhoused siblings in our own county. By joining Outreach, you could contribute your passions to our church by voicing your ideas for service projects, suggesting new projects, and contributing to these projects in whatever ways you feel comfortable. By joining Outreach myself, I have found tangible ways to realize my dreams for our church, community, and world.

Have a great week!
