Reflections from Head of School Brian Goodbar

I’m consistently impressed by the strong sense of community that permeates our school. The parents, students, teachers, and staff genuinely care for one another. The team sets a remarkable example in fostering this Christ-like spirit of care and unity.

While observing classroom instruction over the last several weeks, I have witnessed exceptional educators who lead their classrooms with love, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to our mission of serving Christ by partnering with parents to provide a biblically faithful and academically excellent education.

Plans...

From the Board of Directors

“A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9.

I do not like to plan – just ask my wife. As we get ready to begin our weekend each Saturday morning, she typically asks me if I have a plan. My normal response is some variation of, “I’m not sure yet,” followed by 30 minutes devoted to reading golf instruction articles and then bouncing from one home improvement project to another. This process is rooted in my desire to be actively doing something, in the short-term, rather than wasting any amount of time to strategically plan my work, for the long term. And while I am relatively productive most weekends, I do not believe you would classify my weekends as being effective. Completing tasks in and of themselves is productive. But, completing tasks in a logical order, with the later tasks built upon the results of earlier ones, to achieve a desired result is effective. The consequences of a focus on productiveness instead of effectiveness are minor when applied to the upkeep of my family’s home. They are not minor, however, when applied to the actions taken by a board of directors seeking to provide governance and oversight for an organization.

Looking back on our meeting minutes from the past 18 months, it has become clear to the Heritage Board that...

Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP)

2023 Testing Results

Each year, students at Heritage Christian School take standardized tests. This past March our students took the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP).

This test serves many purposes for our school and our students and measures student achievement and growth across different subjects. The results help parents and teachers identify a student’s academic strengths and monitor a student’s progress over time.

It also allows us to compare their academic performance to other students in the state allowing Heritage to formulate decisions on curriculum and instruction.

Outstanding results for Heritage students:

Welcome to our new staff member!

Anna Hopperdietzel

Middle School Science and 6th Language

Anna Hopperdietzel graduated from the University of Iowa in May 2023 with a bachelors degree in elementary education. She currently teaches middle school science and 6th grade Language at Heritage Christian School. A couple of fun facts about Anna...she was homeschooled from K-12th and was adopted from China. Her hobbies are painting, drawing, cleaning, journaling, cooking, and reading. She recently got married and likes spending time with her husband, Jacob, on the weekends. They both enjoy taking walks, reading God’s word, and trying new coffee places.

"Teaching has been my calling ever since I was a freshman in high school. God has guided my steps and led me to Heritage Christian School after I graduated. I grew up with strong faith-based teachers, so they were my role-models to continue the Gospel through teaching. I am blessed to be able to share my faith and to teach here at Heritage."

Theme Verse

Our theme for the school year is Equipped based on

2 Timothy 3:16-17 "All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work."

We see our work and ministry being just that, equipping our students, families, and each other to know God's Word and be able to be equipped to do every good work as we partner with parents to prepare their children to impact the world they are growing up in for Jesus Christ. Our hope is that we will be examples to our students and their families as we learn and grow in Christ.

Teaching for Transformation

6th Grade Project

In the spring, we shared about Mr. Ellerie's 6th Grade FLEx project (creating a high-quality children's Bible) that they did as part of Teaching for Transformation. In addition to that, Kids Corner produced a video highlighting that process and shared it on their website which provides elementary resources inviting students into God story. We encourage you to take a look at the video and see and hear about the process our students took.
