Are You Looking for Ways To Fast During Lent?
Here are a couple of ideas I found and wanted to share with everyone. Maybe you will want to think about doing one of these Fasting ideas this Lenten Season.
Do You Want to Fast this Lent?
  • Fast from hurting words and say kind words
  • Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude
  • Fast from anger and be filled with patience
  • Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope
  • Fast from worries and have trust in God
  • Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity
  • Fast from pressures and be playful
  • Fast from bitterness and fill your hearts with joy
  • Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others
  • Fast from grudges and be reconciled
  • Fast from words and be silent so you can listen

Lighten Up for Lent 2020: A 6-Week Challenge

  • Do you have too much clutter in your house?
  • Are your closets jammed with unused clothing?
  • Do you have computer monitors you have been meaning to get rid of, but never do?
  • Are your days filled with mindless activity, yet little gets accomplished?

As we prepare to celebrate Easter, we need to prepare our minds and hearts as well. Through prayer and reflection, we clear our minds to focus on the meaning of the Ressurrection. To help clear our minds, it is often beneficial to clear our surroundings. "Lighten Up for Lent" calls on you to declutter your home in the spirit of service to others.

Starting on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 26th , and continuing through Lent, you are challenged to remove at least one item from your home each day. Some items would be thrown away or recycled; other items would be donated or sold. If you sell an item, please consider donating the proceeds to the charity or good cause of your choice.

As you free your home from clutter, focus on how you spend your time each day as well. Is there a way to organize your time to spend more of it on family and friends? Could your time be better spent volunteering for community service? Try to strip the unessential uses of your time in order to spend more time on what you consider truly important.

Hopefully at the end of the six weeks, you will feel a sense of accomplishment that your donations have been put to good use AND Hopefully you will not only be rid of unused items in your home, but be rid of clutter in your mind as well, for an open uncluttered mind is more open to the message of Easter.

NEW INFORMATION
Equalization Members to Annual Conference 2020
Each year additional voting members to Annual Conference are needed to balance the votes between non-clergy and clergy, in other words, make the number of non-clergy votes equal to the number of clergy votes. To achieve this, each District in the UNY Conference is allowed to select a predetermined number of extra non-clergy to vote on behalf of the District. If you would like to serve in this capacity, please fill out the application and return it to Mountain View District. The District Superintendent and District Lay Leader will review the applications and invite some to serve. All applicants will be notified following this process. For those invited to serve as equalization members, they may register upon receiving notification they are invited to serve.  Click here  for application (date on application has been extended from Feb. 27th to Mar.11th)

Upper New York Conferences Upcoming Mission U for 2020

Greetings,
Our Mission u Team is excited about the upcoming Mission u event this summer from Thursday, July 16 through Saturday, July 18, 2020  which will be held in Rochester, NY at Covenant United Methodist Church. This is a change from our past location down at the Asbury Camp and Retreat Center. While much will be the same, there are also some differences. This year we will have programming for children and youth, so I hope you will consider bringing your kids and grandkids along. Obviously housing will be at various nearby hotels or other locations. We will be making recommendations for those of you who cannot commute. Scholarships are available for first time attendees, so encourage your friends to try us out. Please mark your calendars and save these dates. We hope you will take advantage of this incredible opportunity for connection, fellowship, and growth in your faith. Watch for further details as we co-ordinate with our counterparts at the Silver Bay site in the Upper New York Conference. Please note: Mission u is for everyone - male and female, pastor or laity - not just UMW members.

How to use VitalSigns
We introduced you to VitalSigns, a platform that can help your church to track key indicators and uncover important insights. Click here to watch a video that shows you just how easy this program is to use.

Track data, gain insight, and help your church with VitalSigns
The VitalSigns dashboard is a tool that allows churches to track church growth indicators, such as weekly worship attendance, professions of faith, small group participation, missional participation, and financial giving. It is a deeper level of insight, support, and accountability that tracks and trends vital information in an easy-to-understand dashboard.

The General Council on Finance and Administration pays for this software through General Church apportionment's - which the Upper New York Conference paid in full in 2016. The UNY Conference began using VitalSigns about 18 months ago, and so far, 38 UNY churches have signed up.  Click here to learn how VitalSigns can help your church.

For more information about the VitalSigns tool, free to all United Methodist
churches, contact Aaron Bouwens, Upper New York Conference Director of Vital Congregations at AaronBouwens@unyumc.org

Early Response Team Members Urgently Needed

A plea from Conference Disaster Response Coordinator, Mike Block:

We have all heard of various natural disasters which have occurred across the country such as floods, tornados, and other severe storms. What we often don't hear about is how survivors struggle to recover during the following days, weeks and often months after the disaster. We don't think of people who have no power, no heat, no water, even though it is during winter months. We don't think of those who can't live in their home due to mold, or because the house is off its foundation. Instead we watch the news, see the destruction, and then sit down to eat dinner or go about our business the next day.

To bring this closer to home, in our own Conference, in the Utica area, there was a massive flood event on Halloween which damaged some 800+ homes. People are still suffering, cleaning, repairing, replacing furnaces a full 2 months later. Most of us didn't hear about this flood, or have already forgotten about it.

But we can still help. Our Conference has a program to send people almost immediately into disaster areas to quickly, effectively, and appropriately provide a caring, Christian presence to assist survivors in recovery. It is called ERT. It stands for Early Response Team. Early Responders are trained by UMCOR during an 8 hour session with all the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How answers to the typical questions willing volunteers are apt to ask when they feel called to provide help. What do we do? We listen to survivors, we hold trembling hands, we hand out bottles of water, and listen some more. We give hugs, we assure that people care, and then we wash walls, remove wet carpet, wet wallboard, shovel mud, carry out ruined appliances, cover holes in roofs, and make homes secure again. But we don't do repairs. That happens later with rebuilding teams who are often the very same people on the Early Response Team.

So where can you receive more information and training to become an Early Responder? Attend Basic Early Response training event.

Saturday, February 29 at N. Chatham UMC, N. Chatham, NY near Albany. For registration information click here
