ROTARY FOUNDATION GLOBAL GRANTS TO ESSEX AND TRENTON

Congratulations to the Rotary Clubs of Essex and Trenton on the approval of their global grant applications for projects in Ghana. DGN Kim Spirou (Essex) is the primary international contact for a $49,811 grant that will equip a recently built medical clinic in Subinso Ghana and build a water well to provide clean water to the clinic and village serving about 7,000 people. The primary host contact is Sylvia-Clare Fordjour from the Rotary Club of Accra-Airport City. PDG Noel Jackson (Trenton) is the primary international contact for a $71,368 grant that will build wells in ten different villages in Central Ghana that will benefit about 15,000 people. The primary host contact is Father Stephen for the Rotary Club of Cape Coast-Central. Rotary clubs in D6400 are involved in 37 active grants worth a total of $5,889,198; and there is one more waiting for approval and five more in the draft stage. Your contributions to the Annual Fund make this happen.

More than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. That’s 17 percent of the world’s adult population.

Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy. We support education for all children and literacy for children and adults.

The Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP) serves the indigenous peoples in the Western Highlands of Guatemala, where you find one of the lowest literacy rates in the Western Hemisphere. Each year, potential communities that could benefit from this program are identified by GLP leaders in Guatemala, with help of partner organization Cooperative for Education and the Guatemalan Ministry of Education.

This program is widely supported by Rotary Clubs in District 6400 and clubs throughout North America. Approximately 175 clubs and 25 districts will support this year’s Global Grant to benefit the GLP. The Grant is hosted by Quetzaltenango, Guatemala Rotary Club (D-4250) and International Partner, Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland.

“If you want to look for a project that meets the characteristics of Rotary, the GLP is the gold standard.” —2017-2018 RI President Ian Riseley.

The program was featured as an area of focus during Past RI President, Jennifer Jones worldwide tour.

GLP consists of several initiatives: The Spark Ready Program, Textbooks,  Providing Computers,  Rise Youth Development Scholarship Program Clubs can participate in a variety of ways – by having a speaker from the GLP at a meeting, sponsor a student, a school or a program or visit Guatemala to learn more about how Co-operative for Education and Rotary International are addressing basic literacy and education. Individuals and clubs can track their student(s) progress with regular reports and communication.

The most exciting aspect of GLP is the progress that has a significant impact (along with other partners) at increasing literacy and opportunities for Guatemalans. Student participants are now leaders in teaching and curriculum development. Literacy rates have improved signification (over 84%) in the last 30 years with the help of Coed and the GLP. To learn more about GLP, visit coeduc.org. There is a Rotarian tour every February and a smaller District 6400 – Taste of GLP tour – for more information contact Past President, Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Gisele Seguin giseleseguin11@gmail.com

Rotary has come a long way since its founding in 1905. In large part because of Sylvia Whitlock. An advocate, a trailblazer and a humanitarian — these are just a few words people used to describe her. And you will learn more about this impressive woman when you attend District Conference this year.
