GLNC- Newf Notes, September 2020
NEWS FROM GLNC PRESIDENT, DR.Z

Greetings fellow Newf lovers in Michigan!

Wow!  What a year so far.  I’m not going to dwell on “these times”, “unprecedented times”, “unpredictable times”…  If you don’t know what is going on in the world, you are way more involved with your dogs than I am!

Cancellation of events has been a bit disappointing, to say the least.  We just received notice of major changes to one of my favorite events, the Grand Rapids Santa Claus Parade.  We will persevere and dog events will return in some form or another.

Thank you to all of our members for being patient with your Board as we try to keep our members safe and still try to keep everyone engaged.  This “e newsletter” is one effort.  If you have any suggestions for the Board or would like to help or contribute to this communication, the website or our Facebook page, please contact any Board member.  Huge thank you to Lucy Schiefer for her initiative on all of this!

With no dog events, I have found myself with a bit more time on my hands this summer.  For our newer members, I participate in conformation and performance events with Newfoundlands and Bernese Mountain Dogs.  Spring and fall are draft.  Summer is water, water, water.  Winter is mostly obedience.  With very few water tests held this year, we didn’t train as much, so I turned my attention to the garden and my flowers.  And dogs.  There are always things to do with the dogs.  I know these aren’t Newfs, but I hope you enjoy the photos!

SCNR NEEDS OUR HELP

Hello Everyone!

South Central Newfoundland Rescue has a very big fundraising goal and could use our help!

Please click on the "Stronger Together 2020" BUTTON below to learn more and donate to the SCNR GoFundMe effort.
STRONGER TOGETHER

South Central Newfoundland Rescue, along with the Newfoundland Club of America Rescue, have had a record number of Newfoundlands come into our care in 2020.

This has cost us thousands of dollars in Vet care, and sadly, we have a list of more Newfoundlands still waiting for our help.

Some of you may have seen the wonderful rescue placements we've shared along the way, as well as the individual hard stories of Lucy, Lucky, Storm, and Olive to name just a few.

SCNRescue has already placed 59 Newfoundlands in 2020, which is about twenty more than our yearly average. Add in over twenty currently in foster care at various stages of being ready for adoption, we are stretching our limits. At one point, we took in 18 dogs in a period of one month. (More information to come on many of these dogs)

Helping these Newfoundlands takes a team.
We are all volunteers, and Rescue could not survive without our Foster Families, Transporters, Financial Donors, Veterinarians, Treasurers, Intake and Adoption Volunteers, and of course, the sweet Newfoundlands needing all of our help.

We appreciate everyone lifting us up and want to make it clear that everyone is appreciated!

As with so many individuals and businesses during 2020, the need for what we do has increased, and the financial strain is real. Every dollar counts and we would be very grateful for any donation you can give.

A portion of these donations will be shared with NCA Rescue for the dogs assisted in our surrounding region who do not have a Rescue.

We will be sharing more updates as we go along.

Thank you,
SCNRescue Team

EVENT UPDATES
2020 GRAND RAPIDS SANTA PARADE

It is with great disappointment that we have been informed that due to Covid restrictions, social distancing requirements and the planning time involved in the parade, the Grand Rapids Jaycees decided for 2020 to restrict participation to a “vehicle ONLY parade”. There is no walking allowed.
Unfortunately, GLNC will not have an entry in this years 2020 Grand Rapids parade and regrettably, the GLNC Pot Luck Lunch and general meeting is also cancelled.
2021 NCA NATIONAL RESCHEDULED
Mark your calendars now to save the dates!
The Newfoundland Club of America and the 2021 National Specialty Committee have made the decision to reschedule the 2021 Specialty until October 24-31. Because of uncertainty with the COVID-19 pandemic, this decision was made for the safety of all attendees.  We will once again hold the specialty in Frankenmuth, MI and further details will follow in the upcoming weeks.
The National will go on! It is our intention to bring together our fancy in a safe and secure way, allowing us to enjoy our dogs, friendship and our club. Please be patient as details unfold. Sincerely,
Sheri Russell and Kathy Wortham 2021 National Specialty Co-Chairs
