Milestones to Launch MetroHealth Helpdesk Project

Partnership will support families as they await diagnosis & eligibility

Milestones is excited to announce the launch of our Helpdesk partnership with MetroHealth on August 9th!

This collaboration will allow MetroHealth providers to refer patients seeking a comprehensive assessment for autism spectrum disorders to Milestones to supplement the clinical services MetroHealth offers.

Milestones' trained Helpdesk staff will assist families, generally ages 5 and under, who are still waiting for a diagnosis or who may be on waitlists for crucial services to assist with individualized planning and troubleshooting.

"This collaboration aligns with the Milestones mission to serve all families with autism. Adding additional Helpdesk resources directly into communities we hope to serve gives us more access to often underrepresented populations, and allows us to offer support and planning so that families don't feel alone on this journey."

- Eira Yates, Vice President of Education & Services, Milestones Autism Resources

This partnership was made possible in part by funding from the Mt. Sinai Foundation to cover the cost of performing the referral services of MetroHealth patients, and by the United Way of Greater Cleveland.

School Preparation

The start of August signals the beginning of another school year.

We get many questions pertaining to school-related issues at Milestones. Parents and professionals need help navigating the often confusing areas of Free and Appropriate Education (FAPE), Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and how to work with your school to get the best opportunities for your child.

The School Tool Kit will answer some of the many school-related questions we get at Milestones, including questions about IEPs, handling problems with a school district, and dealing with summer regression.

Supporting Your Child While Waiting for a Diagnosis

As you navigate the waiting period for your child's diagnosis, it's important to have resources and strategies in place to support their development.

Here's what you can do:

1. Educate Yourself: Take this time to learn more about autism. Understanding the early signs,

interventions, and local resources empowers you to advocate effectively for your child. Explore

resources like OCALI and Milestones Autism Resources.

2. Seek Early Intervention Services: Access early intervention services even before an official

diagnosis. These tailored therapies can benefit your child's development. Connect with local

early intervention programs for support.

3. Request a School Assessment: You can initiate the process for your child to receive special

education services without a medical diagnosis. Request a multifactorial evaluation (MFE) from

the school district. This can lead to an Individual Education Plan (IEP) tailored to your child's

needs.

4. Utilize Speech and Occupational Therapy: Your child can benefit from speech and

occupational therapy regardless of a formal diagnosis. These services support communication,

fine motor skills, and daily activities.

5. Connect with Support Groups: Reach out to local support groups for guidance and

emotional support. These groups offer valuable insights into the assessment process and local

resources.

6. Engage in Play and Learning Activities: Foster your child's development through play and

learning activities that promote communication and social interaction. Look for adapted

programs at libraries or consider joining playgroups.

7. Take Care of Yourself: Prioritize your own well-being during this challenging time. Seek

support when needed and engage in activities that bring you joy and relaxation.

8. Advocate for Your Child: Continue advocating for your child's needs. Stay organized, keep

records, and communicate regularly with assessment centers and local organizations.

This waiting period is an opportunity to gather knowledge, seek support, and implement strategies that benefit your child's development. Stay positive, be patient, and prioritize your child's well-being.

For personalized assistance and to be connected with therapies, social groups, or support groups, complete an intake form on our website.
