The Importance of Attending TRIO Summer Camps

Sarah Prevo, TTS Director

By attending & participating in our summer camps, students will be able to explore career choices in-person and will:

  • Develop Lifelong Skills: Students will participate in a variety of group activities, during which they will develop communication, social, leadership and problem-solving skills.

  • Gain Independence: Independent time is important in helping youth develop a sense of identity. During camp, students will learn to become more self-reliant as they explore their interests and discover their strengths and weaknesses. They'll learn to trust their inner voice instead of depending on a parent or teacher to tell them what to do. Independence is vital to becoming a self-sufficient adult.

  • Build Self-Esteem: Self-esteem is important for youth because we make decisions in life based on how we see ourselves. We choose our careers, relationships and make other important decisions heavily influenced by our self-esteem. Throughout camp, students will learn self-esteem through taking action and earning results, and by contributing to their community. They'll learn to value themselves because of hard work and achievement.

  • Experience Personal Growth:  One of the biggest benefits of summer camp is it takes students out of their comfort zone and pushes them to try new things. They will grow as they develop their skills doing their favorite activities, and they will develop new skills as they try activities they have never tried before. In general, they will leave camp with a stronger sense of identity and a better idea of what they love, which may help them choose a career path in the future.

Here's what members are saying about TTS:

TRIO Talent Search is a great program to be in!

TRIO is a bunch of programs that help you search for the right path to success in your future studies.

Campus visits are a great opportunity to befriend new people, and see how the state of Michigan changes around the area.  Plus, it is a great way to visit colleges and see what life is like there.  The people who supervise the trip are always so nice and great people to communicate with, too.

Once at these colleges, they briefly discuss the financial costs to get in, and tell you all the possibilities for scholarships and discounts to get into the school.  All of the colleges I've been to always say the same thing - to get those bonuses (scholarships and discounts) depends on two things: your GPA/testing, and your family financial status.

Knowing this turned me around onto the best path for success and it opened my eyes – I still have a very high chance to expand my intelligence and get a good job for good money.

So thank you, TRIO Talent Search team; I hope to keep expanding my interests and my knowledge to further heights with TRIO up until graduation!
