Repealing Prince George's breed ban is a contact sport.  Make contact, get involved.
Here are five opportunities...
Speak to County Leaders About the Breed Ban

There are MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES coming up for you to speak to county leaders about the breed ban.  Will you be there?

County Executive Rushern Baker is holding two "listening sessions", and Council Chairman Mel Franklin is holding three "let's talk" sessions, all coming up in the next few weeks

These sessions can provide us with important opportunities to bring our request to repeal the breed ban directly to the county leaders who make these decisions.

Attending these meetings sends a clear message.  There are enough people who care about this issue for it to be worthy of consideration.  Dogs that are banned in this county are among the 5 most popular types of dog in the state. The economic impact is real.  Folks are choosing NOT to move here because of the ban.  The cost is high, there are other ways to protect the public. Other important public safety aspects of animal control are inadequately addressed while dealing with this unnecessary law.  For other points about this law, review or download our fact sheet page 1    and page 2.  Other reference material can be found here.  In this recent article the County Executive is pleased about a net gain of 4,000 county residents. Imagine how many more would live here if their dog was welcomed too?

This is an issue that impacts you...that you care about.  It's not just a dog, it's your family.  You are entitled to bring this problem to their attention and ask them to do something about it.  If you are concerned about anonymity, please use the Maryland Dog Federation's PO Box address (PO Box 911, Greenbelt, MD  20768) and phone number (301 693 2256) when signing up to speak.  I encourage everyone to sign up to speak, even if it is just for 30 seconds or a minute to ask for repeal.  And if you don't want to stand up to speak, attending will give you the opportunity to speak to them informally as well. Believe me, these contacts matter.

Councilmember & Constituent Meetings - ICYMI

Federation members have had extremely  positive and productive face-to-face  meetings with Councilmembers Todd Turner of District 4 , Dannielle Glaros of Distr ict 3 and   CM Deni Taveras. !

Great news - at this time it looks like we have three councilmembers who would say YES to repeal--one would consider introducing the legislation. We need at least FIVE, preferably SIX votes to pass a law.  We're halfway there!

So let's keep on this!  If you have yet to contact your councilmember, this is a perfect opportunity to do so.  If you are in Districts 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, encourage your councilperson to meet with us and ask them to please support legislation to repeal the ban. If you live in District 2, 3 or 4, thank your legislator for supporting repeal with an email or a phone call.

General Council Schedule

Typically speaking, the Prince George's County Council begins its session in January and goes until August.  From about March to June is "the budget slam" when it concentrates on producing the budget for the upcoming fiscal year.  Council is generally out of session for the summer and comes back in session in September until the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. It is out of session from Thanksgiving week to New Year's week.  While we are current in the end of session, our goal is to set the stage for introducing legislation to repeal at the start of next session.  The work we do now is critical to our future success!
