Well, wasn’t 2020 a heck of a roller coaster ride - the ups, downs, curves, starts, stops…we are done now, let us off! Normally, spring brings a time of quasi-controlled chaos with inventory rolling in by the truck load, but 2020 also threw in a new twist in the form of a worldwide public health crisis. This ‘new normal’ changed everything and we, as a company and as humans, shared in the emotions that our community felt. When so many businesses were closed during the pandemic, we were grateful to have kept our doors open to supply our community with all its gardening and landscape ‘therapy’. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you for your business and patience as we tried our best to accommodate your garden wishes in real time while keeping you and our employees’ safety at the forefront. Like many, we felt the anxiety and helplessness and we found solace in nature by planting our own vegetables & herbs for nutrients and flowers & shrubs for beauty. We helped our pollinator friends, we planted trees for the future, we got our hands dirty and felt life shift through our fingertips as our souls sensed the connection to Mother Earth. As we look forward to 2021 and a new growing season, let’s continue to plant the seeds we cultivate: health, joy, and kindness. In the words of Henry James, ‘Three things in human life are important. The first is to be kind. The second is to be kind. And the third is to be kind.’ That about sums it up, we’re all on this ride together.

What's happening this month at PLN?

January allows us to finish up outdoor projects, plan events for the year, delve into (ugh) paperwork, order supplies, and dream of warmth and summer flowers. In late January we’ll start organizing the greenhouses and preparing for the thousands of annual and perennial plugs (baby plants) for our hanging baskets, patio pots, and perennial production. While we are operating on shorter hours (closed Sunday's and Monday's this month), we are still open the rest of the week if you’d like to stop by and tour the greenhouses, or you'd like help in planning your landscape, or just want to talk all things plant-wise. Our office will be turned into a jungle of sorts, as we highlight our Houseplants this month.

We will be planting a Victory Garden this spring

Victory gardens, also called war gardens were vegetable, fruit, and herb gardens planted at private residences and public parks in the US and many other countries during World War I and II. In wartime, governments encouraged people to plant victory gardens not only to supplement their rations but also to boost morale. These gardens became extremely important, as gardeners could feel empowered by their contribution of labor and rewarded by the produce grown. This made victory gardens a part of daily life on the home front. This Spring, we will be planting a Victory Garden on premise and invite you to do the same at your home. We will be sending out tips and tricks all Spring and we are always available to answer any questions you may have.

Indeed it is January.
This is the month that I begin to collect all my hopes and dreams for this year's garden and landscaping and put them down on paper. Right here and right now, I personally invite you to start Dreaming of Spring.
This year at Pine Lane, we will be creating a Victory Garden as a way of not only promoting the joy of harvesting your own healthy fruits and vegetables, but also to lay the foundation for what might again be a therapeutic respite for us all as we emerge from the social restrictions bestowed upon us by Covid-19. We invite you to follow along with us via newsletters and social media posts to help you create a Victory Garden of your very own. I will detail my plans with you in a future blog and am always available for some tips, tricks, or inspiration. For now, know that many vegetables can be sowed indoors beginning in early March and some can even be sowed outdoors by April!
So start dreaming, and let's get dirty!
