VACCINE SIDE EFFECTS
Vaccine side effects happen and it all has to do with how an individual person’s immune system works. Vaccine side effects are usually caused by a body’s inflammatory response to a vaccine known as the vaccine’s ‘reactogenicity.’
The reactogenicity of the COVID-19 vaccines, especially, have the potential to produce redness and pain at the site of the injection, some swelling, fatigue, headache, and possibly even fever for some people.
But why do vaccine side effects sometimes make us feel that we have been infected with the very microbe we are supposed to be protected for?
The answer is that vaccines are meant to stimulate our immune system with either a whole or partial inactive microbe (or the instructions on how to make part of one). It should not be a surprise that our immune system can sometimes be expected to respond to vaccines in a way that it would be required to help us fight the actual invader.
INJECTION SITE SYMPTOMS
Many vaccines can result in a sore arm for days. This is quite common and here is what causes it...
Minutes after vaccination, our body’s massive cellular defense system, our immune system, starts to become very active with innumerable parts of the system all performing different functions.
Our white blood cells start releasing tons of molecules directly into our bloodstreams in order to engulf the disease-causing microorganisms or the dead cells impersonating them.
Some of these released molecules are vasodilators which inflate blood vessels near the site so that more blood cells can come into contact and interact with the ‘invaders.’ Unfortunately, this means there will be redness and swelling at the site.
The pain that may come associated with the redness and swelling is caused by blood cells releasing molecules called cytokines (see cytokine storm below), prostaglandins or ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which directly bind to the pain receptors. (ATP is an organic compound that provides the energy to drive many processes in living cells.) When a certain threshold is met, the body experiences pain.
SYSTEMIC VACCINE SIDE EFFECTS
These are vaccine side effects that can affect the entire body, known as systemic side effects.
The reason for this is that some of the molecules released by our blood cells don’t stay at the site of the injection. Since they are present in the blood, some will be swept away and taken to other parts of the body.
One example of an interaction is what can happen with the central nervous system. Higher levels of a chemical called prostaglandin E2 will be produced in the brain by the white blood cells.
The prostaglandin chemical can instruct the brain to constrict blood vessels. This will lead to more heat starting to be produced internally which can produce chills and guide the body to seek sources of heat such as a fever.
REACTOGENICITY
Since different vaccines have different reactogenicities, one vaccine may cause more temporary, mild side effects than another. There are several reasons for this:
- The amount or portion of the virus or partial inactive microbe present in the dose.
- The presence of an adjuvant, a molecule which is added to the vaccine to enhance the immune response.
- The type of injection used. For example, injections into the muscle will usually cause fewer side effects than injections into the subcutaneous fat. A slower injection where the needle can move around can also make things worse.
- The personal characteristics of the person getting vaccinated. There is some evidence that sex hormones and stress can be influential.

WE CANNOT CLEAN THAT RUG!!
"We cannot clean that rug!!"
What do we really mean?
We do NOT mean we are NOT ABLE to clean that rug.
It certainly does NOT mean we DO NOT HAVE THE TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE to clean that rug.
And, it does NOT mean we DO NOT HAVE THE EQUIPMENT and SUPPLIES to clean that rug.
SO – WHAT DO WE REALLY MEAN WHEN WE SAY
“We Cannot Clean that Rug?”
THERE ARE 2 MAIN REASONS WHY WE MAY SAY THAT...
#1 - URINE CONTAMINATION:
If the rug is saturated with urine, even a thorough cleaning will not remove the odor and nothing may remove the stain. Especially in the case of machine-made or synthetic rugs, our Special Urine Decontamination Treatment, which is guaranteed to remove the odor, may also exceed the value of the rug.
~~
In rugs that are saturated with urine, and have a glued on backing such as tufted rugs, the urine cannot be removed from the glue by any method.
~~
If a rug is saturated with urine, we will not risk ‘just cleaning it’ because the odor can transfer to other customers’ rugs during the cleaning process, especially in the high heat of the drying room.
~~
Rugs that are saturated with urine for any length of time may develop dry rot which may cause further deterioration during the cleaning process. And urine will attract moths.
#2 - FLOODED RUGS THAT HAVE BEEN UNDER WATER FOR MORE THAN 24 HOURS:
Excess water will deteriorate the foundation of a rug, particularly in woven rugs, especially if the foundation yarns are made of cotton. Wool rugs, on the other hand, can hold up to 30% of their weight in water and still feel dry, which can lead to mold and mildew, as well as dry rot.
~~
Water can also loosen the backing in tufted rugs, causing buckling and ripples.
~~
Even if a previously flooded rug is dry when brought in for cleaning, dry rot may be a problem and may cause many areas of the rug to deteriorate further during cleaning.

MOISTURE and HUMIDITY
(and YOUR AREA RUGS)
Moisture and humidity can wreak havoc with your area rugs. This is especially evident during hot summer months with heavy periods of rain. You may notice odd smells in your house. You may begin to suspect mold or mildew. That pungent odor may be coming from the urine problem you thought was gone.
When any of this occurs, it may be time to check your area rugs for moisture damage. Get up close to the fibers and take a whiff. Check the backs of the rugs as well. If you notice any suspicious odors, it is time to get help.
For some rugs, it may be difficult to determine if there is moisture present because rug fibers such as wool can absorb up to 30% of their weight in water and not even feel wet! If you know there has been moisture and high humidity in your home and you have begun to notice any suspicious odors, play it safe and schedule a pick up or bring in your rugs as soon as you are able.
MOISTURE and HUMIDITY
CAN CAUSE A MULTITUDE OF PROBLEMS
A buildup of moisture and humidity in any rug, even a synthetic one, can cause a multitude of problems, not the least of which is mold or mildew.
Besides the exacerbating odors, fungal growth (such as mold and mildew) can permanently stain textile fibers. Bacterial growth from excess moisture and humidity can quickly reactivate urine odors and stains as well.
TREATMENT FOR ODORS FROM MOISTURE-LADEN RUGS
The treatment we use in our ABC cleaning plant for odors caused by moisture and humidity includes the process of sanitization followed by a thorough cleaning and drying. This process will remove bacteria from the pile of the rug and produce a residual effect that will continue to destroy bacteria for up to 6 months.
SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR URINE ODORS
One of the main causes of offensive urine odors is the ammonia gas which is released by decaying urine. (Fresh urine typically has little odor). Natural bacteria will attack the urine as it breaks down and will digest the urea and other chemicals it contains. The end result of the digestion is phosphate salts (microscopic urine crystals) which attach themselves to fibers and cannot be removed by cleaning alone.
Moisture and humidity, whether from climate related sources or episodes of urine deposited from a warm animal’s body, release the urine from the salts and the process starts again.
A sanitization treatment will merely slow down the process. A special, labor-intensive soaking process is needed to permanently remove the urine salts and the odor. This is the urine decontamination process we use in our ABC cleaning plant.
URINE STAINS
Our urine treatment will remove urine odors, but not the stains. Urine itself begins as an acid but the salts that remain are alkaline. If they are not treated, the salts can strip the fiber of red and blue dyes, leaving only the yellow dye. This is the urine stain and it cannot be fixed unless it is possible to re-dye the rug.
FLOODED RUGS ARE A DIFFERENT PROBLEM
Moisture and humidity may cause problems with your rugs, but If you have experienced flood waters in your home, you must get professional help as soon as possible to remove the water and bacteria-laden ground water in your home.
Bacterial action causing mold can occur very quickly under these circumstances and an application of a disinfectant will be necessary. Although we no longer provide damage restoration services, our cleaning plant is always ready to receive wet area rugs for cleaning and restoration.

HOTDOGS
July 4th and hot dogs always seem to go together. July 4th in America has evolved into one of our most favorite and fun-filled family celebrations. When asked, “What does July 4th mean to you?” most would say, “Hot dogs and Fireworks!”
This could be either a bad or a good answer. Perhaps we are too many light years away from our fight for independence and, though we must express our sincere gratitude for our freedom, one could say the thought of eating our favorite food and the sight of fireworks while gathering with friends and family is not an unimportant reason to love the July 4th holiday!
Or, one could even argue eating hot dogs on July 4th, at baseball games, and for that matter all throughout the summer, is as American as apple pie!
Not only do hot dogs abound on the July 4th weekend, July is National Hot Dog Month!
Although some nutritionists suggest we shun them, for most of us they are probably the best picnic and family gathering food ever because everyone from grade schoolers to grandpa loves them. For that reason alone (though we probably should exercise moderation) we should try to keep the nutritionists at bay at least for the summer.
HOT DOGS and BASEBALL
Did you ever wonder how hot dogs and baseball are linked? According to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council (NHDSC), vendors would sell ‘hot dachshund sausages’ during baseball games at the Polo Grounds in NYC in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
There is a legend that states in 1901 a cartoonist for a Hearst newspaper, Tad Dorgan, sketched a cartoon of a real dachshund dog, smeared with mustard, in a bun. Dorgan didn’t seem to be able to spell the name of the dog and instead wrote ‘get your hot dogs’ for the cartoon caption. Apparently, Dorgan’s cartoon has never been found to prove this, but it certainly makes for a good story!
Besides its early association with baseball parks, hot dogs are just about the most perfect food to enjoy while cheering on a favorite team. They are easy to prepare, inexpensive, and easily portable. Hot dogs are eaten most often between Memorial Day and Labor Day, incidentally coinciding with the peak of baseball season.
HOT DOG HISTORY
A timeline of important facts in the history of the hot dog can be noted as follows:
-
1487 - The frankfurter supposedly was first developed in the city of Frankfurt in Germany. In fact, in 1987, the City of Frankfurt celebrated the 500th anniversary of the hot dog. It is also possible the original ‘dachshund’ or ‘little dog’ sausage was developed in Coburg, Germany in the late 1600s by a German butcher who then went to Frankfurt to promote his product. However, people from Vienna, Austria say the term ‘wiener’ proves their city (Wien) was the birthplace of the hot dog.
-
1800s – German immigrants brought sausages, as well as dachshund dogs to America.
-
1860s – Reports of a German immigrant selling hot dogs with milk rolls and sauerkraut in New York City’s Bowery from a push cart.
-
1871 - Charles Feltman, a German baker set up the first Coney Island hot dog stand selling dachshund sausages in a milk roll.
-
1890s – Historians find mention of ‘hot dog’ in college campus magazines.
-
1893 – ‘Little dog’ sausages were introduced by St. Louis bar owner and German immigrant Chris Von de Ahe, who happened to own the St. Louis Browns baseball team.
More than likely, though, the North American hot dog came from a variation of the common European sausage, brought in by butchers of many different nationalities, which then spread throughout the country.
