COVID LOSS OF SMELL
COVID loss of smell was one of the early symptoms of the pandemic. People infected with COVID-19 could lose their sense of taste as well, but for this article we will be concerned only with the loss of smell.
In some cases, those who lost their sense of smell often did not display other symptoms. Even after a year, many still did not recover from the loss and many of them were left with unpleasant scents having taken the place of normally delightful ones.
COVID loss of smell was experienced more often with the original COVID-19 variant rather than with the more recently emerged Omicron and subvariant strains. Studies have shown that the newer variants are less frequently and less severely affecting the functioning of the sense of smell. In fact, latest research has shown that 90% of people affected by COVID loss of smell completely recover within 2 years.
It has been estimated that over 27 million people worldwide have experienced COVID loss of smell and for many, their symptoms have persisted for over six months. For these people, the loss of smell can affect their quality of life for months after the initial infection. And 27 million people, though only a small percentage of the world’s population, are still a lot of people!
HOW IS THE DAMAGE TO THE OLFACTORY SYSTEM CAUSED?
The olfactory system of the body is responsible for the sense of smell. Scientists at first thought COVID-19 infected neurons in the nose responsible for transmitting smells from the environment into the brain. Those neurons can be found in the olfactory bulbs at the top of each nostril. They send axons or processes to unique sensory spots in the brain. Initially, there was concern that COVID-19 could eventually reach the brain from these actions.
Now we know the virus does not enter those neurons. It instead attacks supporting cells known as sustentacular cells. These cells have many ACE2 receptors on their surfaces and we now know the COVID-19 virus targets these receptors and attacks them. Olfactory sensory neurons themselves do not have these receptors.
Sustentacular cells provide nourishment and protection to the sensory neurons from birth. When they are attacked, they leave the olfactory neurons vulnerable and deprived of nutrients.
Additionally, neurons in the nose are unlike many other cells in the body. They undergo rebirth every two to three months. It appears that when the supporting sustentacular cells are infected by COVID-19, there is some sort of long-term effect on the ability of the neurons to regenerate themselves with time. That may be the reason that some people’s loss of the sense of smell recovers and then there is a second wave of smell loss because the regenerative capacity is not working properly.
PAROSMIA and ANOSIA
Parosmia is the medical term for distorted smells. Anosia is the total loss of smell. Parosmia and Anosia can be a problem for those people whose senses do not return right away.
With Parosmia, smells can be very disturbing. Some categories of distorted smells include feces, garbage, old dirty socks, rotting flesh, etc.
The interesting fact is that parosmia tends to occur or reoccur at the three-month mark, about the time olfactory neurons would naturally be regenerating. If the axons from the neurons are hitting a different spot in the brain reserved for a different odor, the perception of smell is going to be totally different.
Sometimes all one can do is wait until those axons pull back and try to find their way to the right spot or wait until the current neurons die off and new ones send out axons that can find the right spot.
WHAT ARE SOME CONSEQUENCES OF A PERSON PERMANENTLY LOSING THE SENSE OF SMELL?
- Those unfortunate people who permanently lose their sense of smell are left vulnerable to dangers, especially food poisoning and fire.
- They are not able to appreciate the flavor of food and eating is a part of how we interact as humans.
- Not desiring to eat can also negatively impact weight and nutrition.
- A parent would feel a loss if he or she couldn’t connect to their child through the ‘newborn baby smell.’
- Smell dysfunction has been linked with depression, but more study is needed.
Definitely, those with permanent smell loss experience a significant reduction in their quality of life.
CAN COVID LOSS OF SMELL BE RETURNED WITH TREATMENT?
Please continue reading here for the answer to that question and also to find out who is more susceptible to COVID loss of smell as well as whether the loss of smell is as prevalent today as it was early on in the pandemic.

CARPET CLEANING
HOW TO CHOOSE A REPUTABLE CARPET CLEANING COMPANY?
Not all carpet cleaning firms are alike. In fact, the difference in the quality of service from one cleaning service to another can be astounding. With so many claims, counterclaims, and diversity of equipment and technology available, how do you go about choosing the right carpet cleaning person or firm? It can be difficult because there are usually many choices available. The following are a few guidelines to follow that can help you make the correct choice:
-
Schooled and Trained Professionals. Carpet cleaning is an ever-changing field. Good PROFESSIONAL carpet cleaners keep abreast of such changes and constantly improve the services they offer. Make sure the carpet cleaner you choose is professionally schooled and trained and ask whether that schooling is updated on a regular basis. The finest equipment alone does not guarantee results.
-
Association with Professional Organizations. Affiliation with professional trade associations goes a long way. All members of the carpet cleaning company then have access to technically correct and unbiased information on cleaning and restoration. The carpet cleaning company will possess high professional standards and will abide by the Code of Ethics of the organization. If a problem develops during cleaning, expert advice can be obtained from the association's technical personnel. Therefore, the logo of a trade association, displayed proudly in the carpet cleaner's advertisements, trucks, etc., should mean a lot to you. It should generate confidence in the carpet cleaner. Look for such affiliations in the cleaner you choose.
-
Customer Reviews & Recommendations. Ask the carpet cleaning company for names of previous customers. Gauge how reluctant or eager they are at granting your request. Call or text the references, if possible, and find out about their cleaning experience. Ask about the cleaner's appearance, manner of presentation, condition of equipment, ability to answer questions, etc. Find out if the overall cleaning experience was pleasant and would they go back to the same firm. Don't forget to go online to review sites such as Google, Yelp, etc. for more information.
-
Watch Out for the Low End. Misleading (often fraudulent) advertising and glib sales tactics leave those cleaning companies who offer quality service at a disadvantage. Advertisements promising carpet cleaning at unbelievably low prices are prevalent these days. If you think they are too good to be true, you are probably correct. Have you been left with an over wet and still dirty carpet? Have you ended up paying several times more than what you thought you would be paying? If yes, then you have had first-hand experience with such cleaners. Quality service requires investment. It is not possible to offer good service at ridiculously low prices. Do not fall victim to low pricing or 'bait and switch' tactics. At ABC, we stand behind the quality of all areas of our services. We want you to feel comfortable enough to call us again when your wall-to-wall carpets need cleaning. We will remind you each year to assess whether you need a thorough cleaning or a cleaning of just the major traffic areas in your home or business.
-
You Can Contribute to the Success of a Cleaning Job. Cleaning compounds and procedures can be altered to fit the specific needs of the carpet being cleaned and the home or business owner. Describe the use conditions of the carpet and all previous home and professional cleanings to your professional cleaner. For example, if the carpet has been cleaned with a shampoo process several times before, it is reasonable to expect the presence of some detergent residue. With this information, your cleaner may change the cleaning solution to compensate for this. If your carpet has spots and stains, point them out to the cleaner. Tell the cleaner how long they have been there and what may have caused them. Some spots and stains like those from bleaches, urine, mildew, etc., may be impossible to remove even by the most proficient cleaner. Knowing about them will prevent disappointments resulting from unrealistic expectations. Do not remove furniture protectors placed under furniture legs until the carpet is completely dry. Mahogany, redwood, and other kinds of wooden furniture can bleed permanent color stains onto carpet. Metal legs may rust if placed on floor coverings that are still wet.
-
Protect Your Investment. Carpet and upholstery are probably among your most precious possessions. Chances are you have spent a good deal of money acquiring them. Protect your investments and take the time to find the right cleaner. You would be surprised at the number of problems that can develop from a poorly performed cleaning job. Even though choosing the right cleaner won't guarantee the complete absence of problems, it will greatly reduce the chances. Selecting a good and reputable carpet cleaning firm will ensure the highest level of satisfaction.

Like all textile materials, the beauty and life of a carpet depends largely on the care it is given. Proper maintenance can add years of attractive life. Specific maintenance procedures for carpet are determined by the characteristics of where the carpet is installed. In general, though, proper maintenance involves regular vacuuming and periodic cleanings by professional methods.
While vacuuming maintains the surface appearance of a carpet and keeps the level of soil in the pile at an acceptably low level, it can only remove particulate soil and surface dirt. Therefore, other methods of cleaning are periodically required to improve the appearance of the carpet.
The 'hot water extraction' or 'steam cleaning' method of carpet cleaning is usually better than other methods at removing oils, grease, and other forms of matter that cause soiling on carpet. It is best used by professional cleaners with trained personnel and equipment that is up-to-date and specifically designed for the safety of your indoor environment.
Our technicians come to your home or business fully equipped to perform whatever method of carpet cleaning (hot water extraction/steam cleaning, dry cleaning, etc.) is best for your particular situation. You can be assured they will provide you with the best possible service, backed by years of training and experience.
We stand behind the work we do. Our intention is to give you an experience you will be happy to repeat the next time your carpets need cleaning.
WHY NOT DO-IT-YOURSELF CARPET CLEANING?
Like most decisions, the choice between having a carpet cleaned professionally and doing it yourself is frequently based on financial considerations. Electing to use a rental unit rather than a professional cleaner may end up being 'pennywise and dollar foolish.' Before deciding to 'do-it-yourself,' several points should be considered:
- Carpet cleaning is an intricate process. Carpet cleaning by 'do-it-yourself' methods may not enhance the appearance to the desired level. Consumers, in most cases, have had little or no previous experience operating the machines.
- There is a good possibility of misuse and/or overuse. Machines that can be rented for 'do-it-yourself' cleaning, such as shampooing and/or hot water extraction or 'steam' cleaning, can leave some residue on the carpet. If the carpet is shampooed many times, the residue can accumulate, leading to various problems, such as severe foaming on later cleanings, stickiness, an increased attraction to soil, etc.
- Successful cleaning by rental machines is largely dependent on the experience of the operator. Improper use can leave the carpet overly wet, causing possible backing delamination, odor from development of mold/mildew fungi, cellulose browning, color run, shrinkage, and other related problems. This can happen, especially in areas of repeated high volume use, or 'traffic areas.' One or two passes of the cleaning wand may not be sufficient to enhance the appearance of such areas. Attempts to clean them over and over again can cause over wetting and its attendant problems.
- 'Do-it-yourself' cleaning by the dry-absorbent compound method will not cause such problems as over wetting, color run, shrinkage, etc. But it, too, can mean some headaches. If the final vacuuming operation is not thorough, some of the powder will be left in the carpet pile. With repeated cleanings, enough cleaning compound can accumulate to cause some discoloration by its own presence.
- The obvious conclusion is that carpet cleaning by 'do-it-yourself' methods is not a substitute for professional cleaning. It can, at best, merely postpone the need or reduce the frequency of professional cleanings. Rental units lack adequate power and consumers usually lack the expertise to succeed in properly maintaining carpet and prolonging its attractive life.

WINTER CARPET CLEANING
WHY?
Winter carpet cleaning, when the snow falls, the wind blows, and the temperature drops? Why?
You may think, why in the world would I open my nice comfy, warm home to the outside just to get my carpets cleaned? Why not just wait until Spring?
Well, there are some very good reasons why having your carpets professionally cleaned in the winter months (especially January, February, and March) is a great idea and makes perfect sense…
HERE ARE SOME REASONS WHY...
1. It is Easier to get a Carpet Cleaning Appointment During the Winter months
Why wait for company to come or for a special event or even an emergency?
Schedule a professional carpet cleaning during the colder months before the springtime when companies become extremely busy. You can avoid the rush and keep your carpets at an optimal level of fresh and clean all winter.
Don’t forget, if there are spots and spills from holiday entertaining, these can turn into permanent stains the longer you wait to get your carpets professionally cleaned. The more that soil builds up in the carpet, the harder it is to remove.
2. You Will Save Money
Most professional carpet cleaning companies (including ABC!) offer discounts to their customers during the slower winter months.
3. You Will Be Helping to Maintain a Healthier Indoor Environment
During the warmer months, allergens such as pollen, dust, and other airborne pollutants enter your home through open doors and windows. These allergens become trapped in our homes when we seal them up to keep the cold out. Your carpet keeps those allergens trapped in its fibers but if the carpets are not cleaned regularly, they get saturated and the allergens are released into the air, negatively impacting indoor air quality.
When you have your carpets professionally cleaned in the winter, those allergens will be eliminated, leading to better indoor air quality so everyone will be able to breathe easier.
4. It Is Not Just Outdoor Activities That Dirty Your Carpet!
In the colder months, we tend to stay indoors more and allergens from cooking and heating sources can also be trapped in our homes.
5. Carpets Can Actually Dry Faster in the Winter
If you thought your carpets would not dry fast enough after a winter carpet cleaning, you will be pleased to know that carpets cleaned in the winter, in most cases, will actually dry faster! This is because the humidity is lower, helping the moisture to evaporate more quickly.
The professional carpet tech also brings high-powered fans into your home to help dry your carpets even faster to make them available for foot traffic sooner.
6. Extend the Life of Your Carpets
You may ask why clean carpets in the winter when they will just get dirty again come Spring? Because to extend the life of your carpets, it is important to keep them clean throughout the year. The longer soiling remains in the carpet, the more damage it can do to carpet fibers. Soil particles cut away at the carpet fibers, shortening the life expectancy of the carpet.

SNOWFLAKES
Are snowflakes a miracle of nature? They are all so very intricate and delicate, and very, very tiny and it takes an infinite number of them falling every year to construct our winter wonderlands. But, is every snowflake unique from every other snowflake?
WHAT ARE SNOWFLAKES?
Snowflakes are snow crystals. Each one is formed of approximate 100,000 droplets of water in a process that takes about 30-45 minutes. That may seem miraculous! But even so, could it be possible that every single flake is truly different from every other flake? Where did this idea come from, and does it stand up to scientific scrutiny today?
Here is a timeline…
-
1555 - Olaus Magnus, a Scandinavian bishop, was the first known person to make a reference to the unique shapes of snowflakes.
-
1591 - English astronomer, Thomas Harriot, first identified the six-fold symmetry of snowflakes.
-
1611 - Johannes Kepler, a German astronomer wrote about the six-cornered snowflake.
-
1885-1931 - Wilson Bentley, a meteorologist from Vermont took the first detailed photos of snowflakes. He photographed over 5000 snow crystals so well that hardly anyone else bothered to photograph snowflakes for almost 100 years. His claim that each snowflake is unique has held up to scientific scrutiny.
HOW DO SNOWFLAKES FORM?
Snowflakes form in much the same way clouds do. When warm moist air collides with another mass of air at a weather front, snow crystals begin forming. The warm air cools as it rises, and water droplets condense out of it. This is very similar to how a shower deposits steam onto the bathroom mirror.
But water droplets in the air do not have a large surface to attach to and they instead form tiny droplets around microscopic particles in the air such as dust or even bacteria. Big aggregates of these drops are what form clouds.
If the air continues to cool, the water enters a supercooled state. In this state, the temperature is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (or 0 degrees centigrade), the freezing point of pure water, but still a liquid. Once a droplet is frozen, water vapor in the surrounding air will condense onto it, forming snow crystals or snowflakes. Not all droplets freeze. Those that don’t freeze will evaporate to allow for more water vapor to condense onto the frozen ones. Once there are roughly 100,000 droplets that have condensed onto the crystal, the snowflake is heavy enough and it falls to earth.
Snowflakes can come in at least 35 different shapes as well as an infinite number of different sizes. The snowflake that everyone is familiar with is known as the ‘Stellar Dendrite,’ the classic 6 branched snowflake with many other appendages coming out of each branch.
The crystal patterns formed when the water vapor condenses onto a growing flake are dependent on temperature and how saturated the air around it is. When the humidity is high and the air is supersaturated with water vapor, snow crystals grow rapidly and form complex, branched designs. When the humidity is low, the flakes grow more slowly, and the designs are simpler.
SNOWFLAKES AS SYMBOLS
- Snowflakes can be found as traditional seasonal images or motifs, especially around the Christmas season in Europe and North America, where snowflakes symbolize purity. During this part of the year, children often make paper snowflakes to hang on Christmas trees or in windows.
- Snowflakes are used as symbols representing winter or cold conditions.
- Snow tires are often labeled with a snowflake.
- A stylized snowflake has been a part of the emblem of many of the Winter Olympics.
- A six-pointed stylized hexagonal snowflake has come to symbolize the northern heritage and diversity of Canadians.
- Snowflakes can be found on several Coats of Arms as well.
SO WHAT MAKES EVERY SNOWFLAKE UNIQUE?

IT'S RCAD TIME AGAIN!!
WHAT IS THE ABC-RCAD?
In the 1970s, our customer information database was carefully handwritten and kept on index cards in a file cabinet.
Each year we painstakingly addressed hundreds of postcards to our customers explaining our services, reminding them to make cleaning appointments, offering discounts on some of our services, etc.
As we entered the 1980s and our customer base continued to grow, we knew we needed to adopt a more efficient way to keep our records in order.
After checking out computerized databases, we finally settled on an industry specific computer program to keep our database secure and to allow for significant growth.
Sometime during that early computer phase, we began offering a special discount every January, February, and March. These are traditionally slower times for the carpet cleaning industry. We called it our Regular Customer Annual Discount or RCAD. After just a few years, our regular customers began to look forward to those special discount months.
By 1982, our regular services had expanded to include oriental and area rug cleaning, upholstered furniture cleaning, tile and grout cleaning and grout sealing, as well as carpet cleaning.
The RCAD had become our special way to thank our regular customers with special discounts once a year.
The RCAD is now known as the Regular Customer APPRECIATION Discount, and we have extended the discounts to friends and families of our customers as well.
