County seeks nominees to replace departing School Board member

The Hanover County Board of Supervisors is seeking nominations for the Mechanicsville School Board seat after School Board member John E. Redd Jr. announced plans to resign.


Redd plans to move outside the district and will no longer be eligible to serve.



Mechanicsville residents who want to be considered for the position must nominate themselves or be nominated by someone else at the Board of Supervisors’ public hearing on Wednesday, July 24. Residents must also fill out an application, which will be available Wednesday, July 10 here.

Internet may be coming your way soon

We've received an update from our Connect Hanover partners on when and where to expect the next fiber connections. 


Brightspeed informed us they will begin fiber construction in August across portions of Western Hanover — along Verdon Road and Old Ridge Road. They expect home connections to be complete by the end of this year.  


All Points Broadband will begin fiber connections in November across portions of Eastern Hanover — in Cold Harbor and Old Church. They expect to begin home connections in February 2025.

Fire-EMS announces new Deputy Chief

David C. Johnston has been appointed as the new Deputy Chief of Hanover County Fire-EMS.


“DJ” began his career as an Emergency Medical Technician and quickly realized his passion for emergency medicine. He furthered his education by becoming a Nationally Registered Paramedic.


Chief Johnston joined Hanover in January 2007. He's served as a Lieutenant, Battalion Chief, Public Information Officer and Assistant Chief.

Fire Marshal declares countywide burn ban

Due to existing and forecasted drought conditions, the Hanover County Fire Marshal has declared a countywide ban on all open burning.


This means it is unlawful to burn brush, grass, leaves, trash, debris, or any other flammable material. This ban includes all recreational fires, burn barrels and portable outdoor fireplaces. This ban will remain in effect until conditions improve.
