Hanover County Land Use Program may lower property taxes for qualified residents

Hanover County’s Land Use Program may lower tax costs for some residents by assessing their property at “use value” rather than market value.

Landowners who have kept at least five acres of property in agricultural or horticultural use for at least five years may be eligible for the program. Property that has been zoned Rural Conservation (RC) might also qualify.

Applications for the program will be accepted through Feb. 1.

Applications open for elderly or disabled real estate tax relief program

Hanover County is accepting applications for its real estate tax relief program for elderly or permanently disabled residents.

Participants save an average of $1,750 on their tax bill and nearly half pay no County real estate tax at all.

The Board of Supervisors substantially expanded the program this year by increasing both the income threshold and the amount of tax relief available.

The application and qualifications can be found here. The application period ends Thursday, March 21.

Contact the Commissioner of the Revenue’s office at 804-365-6128 or commissioner@hanovercounty.gov for questions.
