New fire station coming to life in Henry District

Fire Station 17 is growing!


Crews are working on the underground plumbing and electrical rough-in. They are also preparing the road used for our firetrucks to go in the apparatus bay.


We can't wait for our firefighters to step into their new home!

Free class available for Hanover residents teaching basic disaster response skills

Be better prepared to protect your family, home and neighbors in an emergency by joining Hanover’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Basic Class.



The class teaches disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and medical operations. 


The free class is open to Hanover residents 18 or older and limited to the first 24 residents who sign up.


The deadline is Monday, Feb. 26. You can sign up here.

Hanover County’s “Spirit of Volunteerism” program honors outstanding individuals who give back to our community.


You can nominate volunteers in the following categories:

 

  • Spirit of One
  • Spirit of Youth
  • Spirit of Youth-Team
  • Spirit of Dedication
  • Spirit of Family
  • Spirit of Team
  • Spirit of Inspiration
  • Commitment to Community 

 

All nominees will be recognized at an awards celebration on Monday, April 15 from 7-9 p.m. at Atlee High School. The event is free and open to the public. 

 

Nominations will be accepted through Monday, Feb. 12. More information is available here.

Hanover County leaders welcome Secretariat back to town

Giddy up!


Our friends in the Town of Ashland broke ground last week on the Secretariat monument coming to the Center of the Universe!


You will be able to find the monument at Reynolds Family Plaza at Randolph-Macon College. There will be an entire day's worth of celebration on Saturday, March 30 to welcome Secretariat home.

Rabies Prevention Clinic happening Saturday

Hanover County Animal Control and Shelter is hosting a rabies prevention clinic on Saturday, Feb. 17 from 9 a.m.-noon at Hanover County's Administration Building, 7516 County Complex Road.


The vaccination fee is $15 and only cash and checks will be accepted.


This is a drive-thru style clinic where animals are asked to stay in your vehicle at all times.

Free gardening event happening Saturday

Learn about beneficial insects and trap gardening at Hanover Master Gardeners' annual Home Gardening Series this Saturday, Feb. 17 at Atlee Library.


All sessions will be held on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. They are free and open to the public.

Family 'driven' by ancestors to inspire youth here in Hanover

Hanover County's Lucian Hunter revolutionized school transportation for Black students across the country. He bought a bus in the early 1930s and became the first person in Virginia to provide a bus for Black students.


Inspired by her great-grandfather, Pamela Hazelwood created the Lucian Hunter Foundation Of Hope to help low-income families across Central Virginia.
