Rosanne McGuire, Old World Foundation Board Chair, announces her "Chair's Challenge"
Old World Wisconsin opened in 1976 as a living history museum that shared stories of settlers who came to Wisconsin. There are many culturally diverse stories to be told. Enslaved and free African and African Americans lived, worked, and built community in Wisconsin. Old World Wisconsin is now revisiting an initial vision by historian Zachary Cooper to share experiences of Black settlers who lived in Wisconsin, including the Pleasant Ridge community in Grant County's Beetown Township. This rural community is well-documented thanks to Olive Green Lewis who preserved their history.

YOU ARE INVITED to enhance the story of Pleasant Ridge
and Black History at Old World Wisconsin today!
OWF has been asked to raise $40,000 by August 2, to fund this program.
A reproduction of the United Brethren Church along with a cemetery chapel from Pleasant Ridge are located at OWW. With financial support, OWW will enhance this experience into a dynamic attraction and celebrate the many stories of the rural Black families whose bounty, labor, and livelihood made this place home.
| |
With your gift to enhance the Pleasant Ridge exhibit, you will receive an invitation to attend an exclusive evening at OWW, our Sunset Soiree on August 10 (August 11 is the severe weather date).
| |
|
While a donation of any amount is deeply appreciated, a donation of
$250 or more will secure your invitation to an exclusive evening of live music, cocktails, mocktails, a variety of food from 4 different food trucks, a narrated tram ride, a presentation at the United Brethren Church / Pleasant Ridge, and an exciting raffle.
$500 donation = invitation to relax at the evenings festivities PLUS a book: "I Have Walked One Mile After Dark in a Hard Rain" by Sara Jo-Saebo for the Midwest History Project. This book explores a collection of letters from the Shepard family who lived in the community of Pleasant Ridge.
$1000 donation = an opportunity to bring up to 3 of your friends to OWW (4 total) on Aug. 10
$2500 donation = all of the benefits listed above plus 2 tickets to a special reception at Old World Wisconsin on September 14.

|
Those who donate $500 or more will receive a copy of this book, "I Have Walked One Mile After Dark in a Hard Rain" by Sara Jo-Saebo for the Midwest History Project
The book takes its title from a line in an October 9, 1850 letter written by one of the key characters in this narrative, Caroline Shepard, to a beloved family member. Responding to a letter from her aunt who lives in faraway Virginia, Caroline says, “My Dear Aunt, I received your letter of September 21st exactly one week ago. I was so anxious to answer it that I have walked one mile after dark in a hard rain.”
The central focus is on the family of Charles and Caroline Shepard, who at the beginning of the story are newly liberated slaves brought to Grant County, Wisconsin, by a member of the slave-holding Horner family of Fauquier County, Virginia.
