Will you help St. John's build a better world?
In 1987, civil war forced 20,000 young boys from South Sudan to leave their families to escape death or induction into the northern army.
These boys became known as the Lost Boys of South Sudan. In 2001, approximately 4,000 of the Lost Boys were invited to come to the United States to become citizens.
A group of them were welcomed and nurtured by the St. John’s community. Many of them graduated high school here in Charlotte. (pictured)
Three of the Lost Boys - James "Lubo" Mijak, Ngor Kur Mayol, and James Manyror - have become inspiring ambassadors for the value of education for their home villages in Ruweng State, South Sudan. They, with the help of many, started both the Nyarweng and Gumriak primary schools in a geographic area where 90% of adults cannot read.
Today, over 800 children from kindergarten through eighth grade attend school and receive daily meals at the Nyarweng and Gumriak primary schools.
For the past several years at St. John’s, our annual Global Missions Offering has gone in part or in full to support the Nyarweng primary school in South Sudan.
Our goal for this year’s Global Missions Offering is $25,000. So far, we have raised $4,943! Thank you to all who have already contributed to this special offering.
The majority of funds raised will go to the Nyarweng primary school for teacher salaries and two remaining portions will go to:
- CBF Field Personnel who are on the ground in Haiti, Lebanon, Raleigh-Durham, Togo, and beyond to provide relief and medical support, and education to those in need
- and housing support for Afghan refugees coming to Charlotte with the Carolina Refugee Resettlement Agency.
Will you give to this year’s Global Missions Offering and help us build a better world?
Give online at the button below, by check with “Global Missions” in the memo, OR through your Realm account.
