| MOLE ACTIVITY: RUNS & MOUNDS |
|
Meet the mole. About the size of a rat (6-8 inches), moles are one of the most destructive pests for homeowners. These earthworm-eating machines dig tunnels at amazing speeds -- destroying yards, landscaping & root systems in the process. So -- how do you know if you have a mole in your yard? The runs and the mounds moles create are easy visuals for spotting evidence of these underground dwelling mammals.
MOLE RUNS Runs are underground tunnels that moles use to travel in while they find their main source of food -- earthworms. Located just below the surface, runs look like raised ridges in yards. Need a visual? If you put a tennis ball on a piece of string about 2 inches underground and pulled it along, the tunnel that you'd make would very closely resemble a mole's run.
MOLE MOUNDS Mounds made by moles are raised, volcano-shaped piles of dirt in your yard that can be upwards of 12 inches high. When the ground surface is too dry, earthworms move deeper under the surface. As the moles go deeper in search of earthworms, they kick the dirt out of a hole to make this mound. Moles do not live in these mounds. It's simply the excess dirt that a mole has removed from your yard as it tunnels deeper.
We are currently in the middle of peak mole season. If you find any runs or mounds in your yard, we can help! Blue Chip has options for you to take back your yard. Our Basic Mole Control program starts with an inspection of your entire yard and utilizes flagged mole traps & a gummy worm-shaped mole bait that not only mimics the mole's natural food but also includes enhancers that attract moles to the bait. Our Enhanced Mole Control program does everything the Basic one does; however, it also allows for more frequent service visits as the yards on this program are typically surrounded by large common areas or wooded areas which can lead to an increase in mole activity. Our trained customer service agents can help you pick the program that best fits your need.

Blue Chip Pest Services, now in it's 3rd generation, established its roots way back in 1959 as a termite control company serving homes in Kirkwood & Webster Groves. Fast forward 58 years, we've grown to a full-service, residential & commercial-based, nationally-ranked pest & wildlife business with offices in Fenton, Ballwin & St. Peters. As our company grows, so have the areas we service. From Alton to Festus and from Warrenton to O'Fallon, Illinios, Blue Chip knows the area we call St. Louis quite well. Not only do we know our city, we truly love St. Louis and the people who live here.
Throughout the year, we're fortunate enough to be able to get involved in helping support many non-profits in our community. In the past month alone, Blue Chip has proudly supported:
- Circle of Concern Food Pantry
- Ronald McDonald House
- Boys & Girls Club of Greater St Louis
- Backstoppers
- Quick Fix Pet Clinic
- Friends of Kids with Cancer
- Ollie Hinkle Heart Foundation
- Grace Hill Community Development
- Megan Meier Foundation
Do you have a favorite non-profit? Email me (kimberly@stlbugs.com) and tell me all about it. We love learning more about the good things that are happening in our area & finding out how Blue Chip can get involved by showing our support.

| OUR 2017 TRUCK OF THE YEAR |
Each December, we announce our Blue Chip Technician of the Year. (Currently, Neil Johnson holds the coveted titled of 2016 Technician of the Year.) While we're still months away from declaring our 2017 Technician of the Year, it's probably safe to say that we can at least crown our Termite Manager, Scott Romay's, truck as our 2017 Truck of the Year! Look closely at the web logo on the back of his truck. It caught a stink bug!
Stink bugs earn their name from the odor they tend to give off when crushed. They are most active in early fall (as they search for overwintering sites to find shelter from winter's upcoming weather) and in early spring (when they re-emerge from their overwintering sites.) During fall service visits, our technicians pay special attention to the south & southwest sides of homes & businesses in order to keep these bugs in check. Love that our trucks are helping to keep them in check too! |
