Overview

If you volunteer with our Heir Property Pro Bono Project, are interested in volunteering, or simply are interested in the subject, you are welcome to attend our free, virtual lunch-and-learn on Wednesday, May 1, from 12-1 p.m.


Learn about the impact the project is having for our clients, get an overview of the types of cases coming in, and learn about cases that have been resolved. The panelists will also discuss client-centered advocacy, and briefly examine heirship affidavits and indemnities.

Panelists

Nicole Mueller is a supervising attorney on our Pro Bono Programs team and Disaster Relief Project. She directs our Heir Property Pro Bono Project, which recruits NC real-estate attorneys to help heir property owners establish clear title to their home and land, thereby preserving generational wealth in families, and safe and affordable housing in low-income communities. Nicole Mueller has been with Legal Aid of North Carolina since 2019. She works from our Greensboro office.

Michael J. Crook is a partner in the Raleigh office of Parker Poe. He represents governmental, business, and professional clients in all phases of state and federal litigation, from pre-dispute resolution through appeal. He has a particular focus on eminent domain and real estate litigation and has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America for his work in those fields. Michael chairs Parker Poe's Pro Bono Committee, coordinating pro bono initiatives across all eight of the firm's offices. He volunteers with NC's Guardian ad Litem program and represents our clients as a pro bono volunteer.

Nancy Ferguson is Vice President and Senior State Underwriting Counsel for Chicago Title in its Greensboro office. Nancy provides legal underwriting support to Chicago Title's approved attorneys, agents and underwriters as well as focusing on claims management and prevention. Her experience ranges from drafting and participating in significant legislation to working with industry leaders on comprehensive responses to marketplace changes, and gathering or coordinating resources to help customers practice better and more efficiently.
