Yes, Grüner Veltliner is what Austria produces the most and is known for. But there are many other very interesting wines in Austria from not so well known grapes produced.
One of them is the Rotgipfler, which I love!
As the weather gets colder and we eat richer food, this wine is perfect....
- think Thanksgiving and holiday entertaining.... everyone wants a Rotgipfler!!!

Rotgipfler is a native Austrian grape variety that is now mostly cultivated in Thermenregion.
The grape was traditionally used in blends—most commonly with Zierfandler—but many producers now see its potential as an excellent varietal grape that can produce aromatic dry and off-dry wines.
It is a pale-skinned grape with vibrant acidity and aromas reminiscent of yellow and tropical fruit, such as peach, pear, melon, and mango. The wines will often have subtle floral, spicy, and almond nuances. They usually have great aging potential.
Rotgipfler is a natural cross between Traminer and Roter Veltliner. It was first documented in 1837, and many agree that it might be native to Thermenregion. Though the variety is not extensively planted and remains relatively rare, the regional terroir proved to be especially suitable for this late-ripening grape.
The wines made from Rotgipfler tend to go well with food. They especially pair well with spicy Asian fare, creamy sauces, and elaborate fish dishes.

The vines of the Thermenregionstretch from the city limits of Vienna, over the hillsides of the Vienna Woods and along a chain of hills (the highest of which is Mount Anninger) to the area south of Baden. Even today, white wine is prominent in the north of the region around Gumpoldskirchen, with a special focus on the autochthonous varieties Zierfandler (also known as Spätrot) and Rotgipfler. In the south of the region, red wine predominates with the varieties Sankt Laurent and Pinot Noir.

Heinrich Hartl III and his wife Marie-Sophie run a fine family winery with 16 hectares of vineyards in the Thermenregion wine region, south of Vienna. Their training and experience in the wine industry culminate in a focus on the highest quality. Thus, it is a conscious decision to remain small and to concentrate on single vineyards. The vineyard area is only expanded when historic vineyards with individualistic characteristics become available. In a climate where both cool and warm influences meet, the talented winemakers produce both white and red wines of great and certain ageing potential. Elegant reds from Pinot Noir and St Laurent and old Austrian white varieties, such as Rotgipfler, Zierfandler and Traminer, have been growing in this area for centuries. As they have humility and great respect for nature and their work, Marie and Heinrich's top priority is to farm as sustainably as possible. From 2022, the production has been certified organic for this reason. Lively, elegant and profound, the Hartl wines are also destined to age and mature. Despite a modern approach, the two continue the long tradition of the region and welcome guests from all over the world to their home.

Rotgipfler
Thermenregion
2021
Pale straw-gold with green highlights, impressive for its silken luster. On the nose, the first impression is that of mirabelle plums and honeydew melon with a subtle hint of spring blossoms. Then becoming more intense: orange zest, blossom, honey, and ripe green apples.
On the palate, the wine is characterized by piquant acidity and its powerful but polished core of sweet fruit, which describes
a lovely arch from green fruits to apples to fresh pineapple.
On the finish, there's a very persistent impression
of honey blossom.

2021 Rotgipfler Weingut Hartl
"Light greenish yellow with silver reflections. Aromas of ripe apple, candied orange zest and blossom honey with floral touches and tobacco underneath. Medium body with mango fruit and a well-integrated acid structure; somewhat lactic on the palate.
Already easy to drink."

This wine is cloudy in appearance. A slight tannic grip on the palate along with bracing acidity builds a firm structure. Notes of apricot, papaya and persimmon mark the palate, while candied ginger notes linger on the finish.
