Heat Monitoring Center at Durham's Museum of Life & Science Receives Federal Funding

Extreme heat is the deadliest type of extreme weather in the U.S. and acutely impacts our region. Young children, elders, and those who work outdoors are at particular risk from rising temperatures. The Center for Collaborative Heat Monitoring will support community data collection on extreme heat, helping to monitor and and evaluate factors influencing heat risk at a local scale. Keep your eye on this important resource for addressing extreme heat right in our backyard!

The Launch of the NC Resilience Exchange

The North Carolina Resilience Exchange is an interactive resource designed to empower local leaders in the state with guidance, data and resources to make their communities and natural spaces more resilient. This Exchange includes a map of vulnerabilities across the state, funding opportunities, and a list local experts among other resources. Regardless of the impacts your community faces, the NC Resilience Exchange has something for you.

Important Update on ARPA-funded Water Infrastructure Grants

Communities are beginning to receive communication from the Department of Water Infrastructure regarding grant awards funded through American Rescue Plan (ARPA) dollars. These communications include instructions to complete an initial assessment questionnaire and participate in a virtual session with the DEQ Grant team.

Please note that while many communities successfully claimed revenue replacement for their local ARPA funds, this provision may not apply to DWI/DEQ grants. As a result, recipients will be monitored as subrecipients of the state, necessitating compliance with additional reporting and oversight requirements.

Local governments can email Tara Nattress, tnattress@centralpinesnc.gov or Alana Keegan, akeegan@centralpinesnc.gov for assistance with this process.

Attend the Expo and connect with local government employers from dozens of cities, towns and counties! More than 40 cities and counties will be represented.
