Newly Released Heat & Health Index Tool

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recently launched a new tool to help communities prepare for heat and prevent heat-related illness and death. The Heat and Health Index (HHI) is a national tool that incorporates historical temperature, heat-related illness, and community characteristics data at the ZIP code level to identify areas most likely to experience negative health outcomes from heat and help communities prepare for heat in a changing climate. Each ZIP code has a single ranking for the overall HHI and rankings for individual components so that users can make informed decisions to prepare for and prevent the negative health impacts of heat in their communities.

Grant Funding Available for Community Engagement on Climate Action

Central Pines Regional Council (CPRC) and partners are actively engaged in development of the region’s Comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CCAP). For those who joined an event and/or provided input into the Priority Climate Action Plan (PCAP), thank you! We are reaching out to our networks, and are hopeful that you will share this with your networks as well, to share this exciting opportunity.

CPRC is the lead agency for a $1M planning grant from the U.S. EPA's Climate Pollution Reduction Grant (CPRG) program. CPRC is working with community-based organizations (CBOs) to engage and empower communities throughout the region to participate in the program and help plan for climate action. CBOs are eligible to apply for funding to directly support climate action engagement activities. The intent of the grant funding is to support activities that educate more communities, particularly those that fall within Justice40 thresholds, throughout the 8-county region about climate change, raise awareness about both climate risks and opportunities for reducing climate and air pollutants, inform strategies for the development of a Comprehensive Climate Action Plan, and build capacity for community members and partners to take action. See CPRG-CBO Sub-grant Guidelines for more details.

Funding is available through this grant until available funds are depleted and/or no later than April 30, 2025.

Some of our CBO partners have already been taking advantage of this funding opportunity and we hope you will too! For additional information and guidance on the types of activities/events that can further the work of the CPRG climate planning process, please check out our CBO Toolkit, where you can find guidelines, a grant application form, a dashboard with live updates on funds spent/available, along with other resources related to the project.

June is Pride Month

Pride Month commemorates the events of June 1969 in New York, known as the Stonewall Uprising, that sparked a liberation movement in the United states. The purpose of this month is to recognize the impact that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ+) individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally. Pride Day is widely recognized on June 28, the anniversary of the Uprising.

Cary resident Sally Zumbach became an activist for the rights of the queer community when the topic for many was taboo. She served as the president of the Triangle chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) in the 1980s and 1990s and brought the subject out of the shadows. There will be a free event on June 18 at 7:00 pm at Page-Walker Arts & History Center in Cary for anyone who wants to learn more about her life and impact from her son and daughter Mark Zumbach and Debra Zumbach Grannan.
