A Message from Rebecca Mountain DNP, RN

When counseling heart failure patients in the hospital, we often hear that following a sodium-restricted diet is the most challenging part of the self-care regimen. This is true for newly diagnosed and more experienced patients. We hear you! Within this newsletter, pick up some new facts, bust some myths about sodium, and try some tasty recipes to keep you on track.


Speaking of staying on track, sign up for the October support group, where a CCH dietician will be giving tips for your low-salt diet. We’d love to “see” you at the meeting, where you can ask questions of the speaker, get support from fellow attendees, and give input on future topics you’d like us to cover. All new attendees will be entered for a chance to win an assortment of Mrs. Dash Salt-Free Seasonings that will be mailed to your home!

Get the Scoop of Sodium and Salt


When there’s extra sodium in your bloodstream, it pulls water into your blood vessels, increasing the total amount (volume) of blood inside them. With more blood flowing through your blood vessels, blood pressure increases. It’s like turning up the water supply to a garden hose — the pressure in the hose increases as more water is blasted through it.

How to Track Your Sodium

Start tracking your sodium with this printable sodium tracker. It’s an easy way to keep tabs on how much sodium you’re getting in your diet. Jot down what you eat — that blueberry muffin for breakfast, or the garlic bread with last night’s spaghetti — and the accompanying sodium stats. Remember: sodium levels vary in the same foods depending on the brand or restaurant.
