With a dual mission to train medical students to effectively communicate, and educate the School of Medicine community about the specific health needs of the population, a group of third- and fourth-year medical students are recruiting the next cohort of leaders for the Medical Spanish Initiative.
In honor of Dr. Anthony Fauci's recent appointment as a Georgetown Distinguished University Professor, undergraduate students from the School of Health's Academic Council extended a warm welcome and shared their appreciation for his work.
In “Preventing Heat-Related Illness Among Outdoor Workers — Opportunities for Clinicians and Policymakers," published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Rosemary K. Sokas, MD, MOH, and colleague Emily Senay, MD, MPH, say mortality from heat stroke among outdoor workers has risen steadily over the past two decades as temperatures have climbed.
A multi-site, five-year study led by Mark Hofmeyer, MD, a cardiologist at MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute and assistant professor at the School of Medicine, has demonstrated the benefits of routine genetic testing for patients with advanced disease from dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle, and their at-risk family members.
Awards and Achievements
Ivana Peran, PhD, assistant professor of molecular oncology, has been awarded a career development award from Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) for a project titled “Role of Stromal Cadherin 11 in Chemotherapy Response in Pancreatic Cancer.” Recognizing researchers new to the field who are poised to make groundbreaking discoveries and become mentors to the next generation, the award will provide $250,000 in funding over two years.
Announcements
The Verstandig Pavilion at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is working toward a pavilion activation date of December 10 when the hospital will begin seeing patients in the new emergency department. Construction to replace critical underground infrastructure supporting Georgetown’s central heating and cooling plant will require the excavation of a section of West Road between the plant and Cooper Field. Both lanes of this section of West Road will be closed through November 30.
The Georgetown-Howard Universities Center for Clinical and Translational Science (GHUCCTS) KL2 Scholars Program is pleased to announce a supplemental round of KL2 awards with this call for new applications for Georgetown University employed, full-time faculty. Full applications are due on October 9, with an anticipated appointment in January.
