ER, Urgent Care or Office Visit:
Getting the Right Type of Care for Your Condition
When you or a loved one is facing an illness or injury, you'll need to decide how serious it is and how soon to seek medical care. Here are a few tips to help you choose when it's time to call your doctor, visit an urgent care center or go to the emergency department:
- If your problem is life threatening or could leave you permanently disabled, call 911 and get to the nearest emergency department
- If you are caring for a child and you believe the child needs to be seen by a doctor right away, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department
- If your problem is not life threatening, but you are concerned and you cannot see your doctor right away, seek an urgent care center
- If you have a common illness, such as a cold, flu, migraine, minor injury or rash, it's best to call your doctor before seeking out additional care
- If you're in doubt about what to do, check to see if your insurance offers a nurse telephone advice line and give them a call
