Small Places Close to Home:
A Virtual Tour of Val-Kill Home of Eleanor Roosevelt
August 27 at 7pm in the WPL Reading Room via Zoom
Join National Park Service Ranger Dani Massaro on a virtual walkthrough of Val-Kill, the home of Eleanor Roosevelt. She wrote that Val-Kill was "where I used to find myself and grow. At Val-Kill I emerged as an individual." We'll explore the rustic cottage in the woods that served as a retreat for Mrs. Roosevelt during her husband's lifetime and became her permanent home after FDR's death in 1945. Val-Kill was central to Eleanor Roosevelt's development both as a person and as a political figure, activist, and diplomat, and today is the place where we honor her life and legacy.

Saturday Morning Book Club's August pick
|
The Saturday Morning Book Club will have their next meeting on Saturday, August 24 at 10:30 a.m. They'll be discussing Beyond the Point by Claire Gibson.
Duty. Honor. Country. That’s West Point’s motto, and every cadet who passes through its stone gates vows to live it. But on the eve of 9/11, as Dani, Hannah and Avery face four grueling years ahead, they realize they’ll only survive if they do it together.
Everyone knows Dani is going places. With athletic talent and a brilliant mind, she navigates West Point’s predominantly male environment with wit and confidence, breaking stereotypes and embracing new friends.
Hannah’s grandfather, a legendary Army general, offers a stark warning about the dangers that lie ahead, but she moves forward anyway, letting faith guide her path. When she meets her soul mate at West Point, the future looks perfect, just as planned.
Wild child Avery moves fast and doesn’t mind breaking a few rules (and hearts) along the way. But she can’t outpace her self-doubt, and the harder she tries, the further it leads her down a treacherous path.
The world—of business, of love, and of war—awaits Dani, Hannah, and Avery beyond the gates of West Point. These three women know that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. But soon, that adage no longer rings true—for their future, or their friendship. As they’re pulled in different directions, will their hard-forged bond prevail or shatter?
Beyond the Point is a heartfelt look at how our closest friends can become our fiercest battle buddies. After all, the greatest battles we fight rarely require a uniform.

Adult Fiction Book Club's September selection
|
On Wednesday, September 18 at 4:00 p.m., the adult fiction book club will meet in our reading room to discuss Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward.
A hurricane is building over the Gulf of Mexico, threatening the coastal town of Bois Sauvage, Mississippi, and Esch's father is growing concerned. A hard drinker, largely absent, he doesn't show concern for much else. Esch and her three brothers are stocking food, but there isn't much to save. Lately, Esch can't keep down what food she gets; she's fourteen and pregnant. Her brother Skeetah is sneaking scraps for his prized pitbull's new litter, dying one by one in the dirt, while brothers Randall and Junior try to stake their claim in a family long on child's play and short on parenting. As the twelve days that comprise the novel's framework yield to the final day and Hurricane Katrina, the unforgettable family at the novel's heart—motherless children sacrificing for each other as they can, protecting and nurturing where love is scarce—pulls itself up to struggle for another day. A wrenching look at the lonesome, brutal, and restrictive realities of rural poverty, "Salvage the Bones" is muscled with poetry, revelatory, and real. - Goodreads
