Proper 16

Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Maui Strong: A Community Comes Together on the One-year Anniversary of the Deadly Wildfires

On Thursday, August 8, 2024, hundreds gathered at Hanaka’ō'ō Beach Park on West Maui, for a paddle-out to commemorate the lives lost in the horrific wildfires that took place a year ago, but it was also to recognize the resilience of those who survived, and a community who is determined to literally "rise up from the ashes." The paddle-out was the first of several events that took place through the weekend, and concluded with an interfaith service on Sunday at the Lahaina Civic Center. Each event brought together a community that has endured unimaginable suffering, but are finding strength and hope in the support of thousands who continue to reach out, pray, and provide assistance to those affected.

The Diocese's Alcohol Policy and Gambling Laws in Hawai'i

As congregations begin planning their church programs for the year, it's a good time to remind folks about two topics that may have an impact on special events and activities:

  • Alcohol - Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick reminds all congregations of the expectation to follow the Diocese's alcohol policy that can be viewed HERE. In addition, the Church Insurance Agency Corporation has issued their recommendations regarding Liquor Liability HERE. Both documents can be found on the diocesan website's Forms & Documents resource page HERE (under Administration).
  • Gambling - The State of Hawai'i prohibits all forms of gambling, including casinos, sports betting, lotteries, daily fantasy sports, and yes, commercial bingo. Gambling laws in Hawaiʻi are governed by the Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes which are part of Chapter 712: Offenses Against Public Health and Morals in Title 72: Hawaiʻi Penal Code. Click HERE for the full text of each law Hawaiʻi has for the various aspects and concepts of gambling.

HOLY NATIVITY YOUTH TRAVEL TO MAUI- Youth from Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Honolulu, recently traveled to Maui to visit historical sites with ecological and environmental significance. Accompanied by the Rev. Jenn Latham (above right), who is also on the Diocese's Environmental Justice/Creation Care ministry team, they also visited Trinity By-the-Sea in Kihei, where they cleaned up the grounds of their columbarium. The Rev. Hau'oli Tomoso of Trinity was grateful for their help, saying that they were there "not only to learn but to serve!" Latham shared that the teens felt their time at Trinity "was the highlight of their visit!" Above, the youth pose with Fr.
