Patterson Attends UMMC School of Medicine Building Dedication
MAFP President
Dr. Katherine Patterson of Indianola, represented the Academy on Friday, August 4, at the University of Mississippi Medical Center's dedication ceremonies for the new $74 million School of Medicine building.
The 5-story building houses classroom space, study areas, lab space and simulation space for Mississippi's only publicly-funded medical school. News reports said the new facility will enable the school to accept more first-year students, eventually increasing medical school classes to 165.

MAFP Gains 70 New Members
at UMMC's
Orientation for M1s
MAFP was introduced to 150 new first-year medical students this week at the University of Mississippi Medical Center's brand-new School of Medicine building, and 70 of them joined the Academy that day.
The event was part of orientation for new M1 students at the school. They enjoyed a fajita buffet lunch while viewing a MAFP slide show highlighting student involvement.
MAFP's Kay-Lynn Meador addressed the crowd and highlighted the benefits of MAFP membership, which is free to medical students.
The great membership response was due in part to the testimonials of two UMMC student leaders who are active MAFP members, and encouraged the M1s to join. Will Casey (M4) is president of the UMMC Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) and Craig Bullock (M4) is vice president. Both Casey and Bullock were elected by students to represent them on MAFP boards.
Several other FMIG officers and representatives were present and assisted with the event.
The luncheon represented family medicine's time to shine during orientation for M1s.
Dr. David Norris of the UMMC Family Medicine department and Dr. Wahnee Sherman of the Rural Scholars Program talked to the students about the need for primary care physicians in Mississippi. Dr. Shannon Pittman of UMMC Family Medicine department, Dan Coleman of the Rural Scholars Program, and Kristen Kern of MAFP were also present.

MAFP Nominates Two Doctors for Physician Leadership Class
Dr. John Vanderloo of Madison and Dr. Christy Vowell of Eupora have been nominated by the MAFP Board to be part of the Physician Leadership Academy's Class of 2018. They will learn new skills - conflict resolution, negotiation, how to talk to the media -- and prepare for future leadership positions.
Sponsored by the Mississippi State Medical Association, the academy is limited to 18 scholars and consists of six 1-day sessions spread out over 9 months. Each scholar must be a practicing physician nominated by his or her specialty society, medical practice, hospital or health plan.

NMMC Family Residency QI Project Displayed at National Conference
Congratulations to the North Mississippi Medical Center Family Medicine Residency Program, which recently completed a Quality Improvement project to increase immunizations in senior adults. They received a certificate at the AAFP National Conference for Residents and Students in Kansas City in late July. MAFP Draw Down Winners
Four winning tickets chose to split the $10,000 evenly at this year's MAFP Foundation Draw Down, which raised more than $12,000 for the Foundation and its efforts.
Winners are Dr. Stanley Hartness of Jackson, Dr. Scott Kelly of Flowood, Amber Naccarato of Madison, and a group of nurses from South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel. In the photo above, Dr. John Hassell and Dr. Kelly Shoemake Tullos, who both work at South Central Regional, are pictured representing that group.
The Foundation's Silent Auction at the Annual Meeting was a financial success, raising more than $5,200. Thanks to all who donated items, who went to local businesses and asked for donated items, and to those who sought corporate sponsors for the Draw Down.

Take a Closer Look at PRIME Registry with a MAFP Member
MAFP is partnering with the American Board of Family Medicine to promote PRIME Registry, which can help you use the data from your EHR to view any performance gaps, reduce reporting burden, and identify gaps in care at the individual patient level.
Brandon physician Richard Randolph, MD, uses PRIME Registry, and he recommends fellow physicians take a look at it. He said it is not a burden for his staff - once his IT person connected the system, there was nothing else he had to do. Dr. Randolph said he looks at reports on 30 different measures and chooses what to submit to CMS.
"If you're looking for a way to do this, it's free for the first 3 years, and they do a really good job," Dr. Randolph said.
ABFM announced July 7 that it is offering the PRIME Registry FREE to the first 2,000 board-certified family physicians who sign up. The ABFM will continue to enroll Diplomates for free until the 2,000 slots are exhausted.
PRIME is currently supporting hundreds of family physicians in reporting data for several federal practice transformation demonstrations including TCPI and CPC Plus, in addition to MIPS as part of the Medicare Quality Payment Program. E-mail prime@theabfm.org to sign up.
