The Chemist’s ring has been proposed as a national symbol of the professional chemist. It should be worn on the pinky finger of the working hand.

The new titanium ring is available at the very reasonable cost of $25 + GST. This is only possible because we are ordering them from China in a large volume. Please note that half sizes will not be available for the titanium ring because of the numbers of rings required for each size. 

If you want a titanium ring and haven’t placed your order yet, your order must be received no later than September 17, 2018. Because of the volume required we won’t be ordering again for a while (a year or two). If you want one, now is the time.

New and exciting things are being planned for the ACPA. Networking Events, Social Clubs, Lectures, Raffles and Draws!! This is what is currently on the docket for the Marketing Committee. We are looking for go-getters to help shape how the ACPA will look in the coming years, and want to hear what you have to say. Keep your eyes peeled for the ACPA Strategic Plan Survey to be released next week. The strategic plan will look multiple years into the future and give our association a road map and focus for the coming years. The plan will highlight the value we, as a profession, offer to the public. It will set out our vision for our ideal future, the things we do to reach our vision, our values as professional chemists, our goals as an organization, and strategies to achieve these goals.

This short, one-day course will provide an introduction to the ethical framework that guides professional chemists in the conduct of their duties. The course focuses on solving practical issues that arise in professional practice. After a full morning of presentations by two instructors, Nils Petersen and Kathy Janzen, and several case studies examining issues that arise in everyday work situations, an examination based on a case study is given at the end of the day. Candidates that pass the exam will receive an Ethics certificate. A course outline and biographical sketches of the presenters are attached.

UA-WiSE (University of Alberta Women in Science and Engineering) and WISER (Women in Science Engineering and Research) are launching the fourth year of their mentorship program. The program is geared towards STEM fields and aims to connect undergraduate students, early career professionals, graduate students, and professionals who are well established in their careers. The program is open to both men and women.

Only 4 months left for current P.Chems to complete this course.

C.I.T. and new members must complete the course prior to reclassification to P.Chem. status.

We are pleased to partner with the Laboratory Safety Institute (LSI) to offer a 10% discount for Association of Chemical Professionals of Alberta (ACPA) members to their 2-day Lab Safety Course taking place in Edmonton this coming October 9-10. The course is also being offered in Mississauga this September 18-19 perchance this would be more suitable for you.

This 2-day Lab Safety course will be eligible for Professional Development Credits (PDC) and will discuss federal and provincial legislation and regulations that are pertinent to laboratory safety.
