Teamwork Makes the System Reliability Dreamwork

It is not every day that a steel transmission line pole (photographed above on left) requires being replaced; however, SEC contract crews recently replaced a 100-foot pole in Powhatan. This was a job that required tremendous planning, communication and resources.

In addition to replacing the transmission line pole, SEC and contract crews also completed a project on insulators found to need replacing during a routine visual inspection (photographed above on right). Due to the replacement, a short-term planned outage was required to ensure the safety of the lineworkers performing the work.

Each of these projects ensures greater system reliability for the Cooperative's members.

Southside Advisory Council Assures

an Active Partnership with Members

SEC knows the value of having two-way communication with its members across its 18-county service area. To enhance its member focus, the Southside Advisory Council has been created to benefit both SEC and its members by assuring an active partnership for communication.

Members of the SAC are able to:

  • Hear the latest from SEC CEO, executive team and staff.
  • Be a local community influencer.
  • Engage in the Cooperative's initiatives and industry-related happenings.

The newly piloted Southside Advisory Council kicked off in August in Dinwiddie County where nearly 30 community leaders, SEC members and Cooperative staff alike shared in fellowship, education and valuable conversation about the Cooperative’s electrical system, vegetation management, construction plans, website and the new strategic plan.

At the first SAC meeting, SEC allotted one-third of the meeting time for Q&A discussion. “This was truly an opportunity for our members to have an open discussion with their Cooperative,” said SEC VP of Member Engagement and Communications Sheena Lankford.

Lighting accounts for around 15% of an average home’s electricity usage*. Great news, if you replace 20 (75 Watt) incandescent light bulbs with the equivalent 20 (15 Watt) LED bulbs, you could save upwards of $200, annually.

The cost of LED light bulbs has decreased dramatically since they entered the market. LEDs use up to 90% less energy and last up to 25 times longer than traditional incandescent bulbs.
