"As of July 16, 2023 Nationwide Insurance will no longer renew homeowners policies in coastal areas of North Carolina. This will impact more than 1500 policies in Dare County and approximately 9,000 in total for the coastal areas of North Carolina. Nationwide had discontinued writing new policies in the coastal areas several years ago, so now the renewals will be discontinued. This is the latest in the trend of big insurance carriers discontinuing coverage in areas that are considered high risk. Anyone affected by the Nationwide action will be contacted by their local agent close to the time of annual renewal of coverage. This does not impact flood insurance coverage by Nationwide since that is a federal program with Nationwide as the servicing company."
