Farragut Middle School's Debate Team Earns First Place at American Debate League's Winter Classic

For the last two months, students in Farragut Middle School's Debate Club have been preparing for the American Debate League Winter Classic.

On Saturday, December 17, four teams of Hastings students brought their A-game to compete in the tournament's Novice Division, consisting of three rounds with a total of 50 student competitors.

Student Poppy Leon placed 10th for Top Speakers, Felix Reitz placed ninth, and Gabriel Akar placed third. Among 22 other teams, the team of Gabriel Akar and Felix Reitz placed seventh, the Team of Eden Greenberg, Anna Lapson, and Phoebe Gelfand placed sixth, and the Team of Nami Saeed, Poppy Leon, and Karen Saltzman placed fifth, overall.

Their combined performance earned the Debate Club First Place out of 37 schools that competed.

"These students prepared for so long going into this competition," said Debate Club Advisor Devita Cruz. "They were in my room until 4:30 p.m. every day the week before the tournament. I'm so incredibly proud of the dedication that they put into their speeches and research, which ultimately led to their success!"

First-Graders Head into the New Year with a Deeper Understanding of Each other & the World

It all began with a unit on "family" where first graders learned about how families grow and change over time.

From the homes they lived in and the food they ate then, to the clothing they wear and what they do for entertainment now, the lesson was about celebrating families and respecting past and present traditions. Students even created holiday "me" bags, pulling together items that represented their family's traditions and sharing them with each other.

"It was a great way for the kids to learn about each other and what a peaceful, accepting world looks like," said First Grade Team Leader Maria Gunther.

Transitioning to a larger lens, classes read We Dream of a World, an empowering book written by Pershing Accelerated School students that gives kids information on how to make the world a better place.

After reflecting on the lessons of the book, the elementary schoolers were asked: "What do we want OUR world to be like and how can we make that happen?"

To put their teachings into action, first-grade students and teachers organized a Food Drive & Sing-along. Families were invited to attend, and the food collected was donated to Hastings-on-Hudson's Community Center.

Watch a clip of the Sing-along below, where students sang Hillside's version of This Land is Our Land among other songs about peace and harmony.

Environmental Club Makes Global Impact with Sneaker Drive Fundraiser

'Tis the season of giving and middle schoolers are doing just that!

Recently, the Environmental Club hosted a Sneaker Drive Fundraiser at Farragut Middle School. The students worked with a free Sneaker Recycling Program called GotSneakers, whose mission is to recycle and reuse quality pre-loved sneakers.

GotSneakers contributes to the circular economy by keeping sneakers out of landfills and reducing toxic chemicals from being released into the air and soil. All reusable sneakers from its Sneaker Drive Fundraiser Program are recirculated to second-hand markets so people can access quality, pre-owned footwear at affordable prices. Heavily used and damaged footwear is recycled or converted from waste into new energy.

Students received a free Fundraiser Kit to get started with their campaign. From November 29 through December 17, they created the donation boxes.

"They went from classroom to classroom to explain the cause and collect sneakers for donation," said Environmental Club Advisor Jill Ochacher. "They even made announcements over the loudspeaker each morning to spread the word."

"Your trash could be someone else's treasure," said student Sophia Skaskiv.

Students Alyssa Schlacter and Bella Gordon quoted Hellen Keller: "Alone you can do so little; together we can do so much."

Six large bags of sneakers were collected through the fundraiser with all proceeds donated to the Hastings Youth Council.

Kindergartners and their Candy Cane Houses

On Wednesday, in Tesnim Nagrath's kindergarten class, students and their families spent the morning making candy cane houses.

The activity served as both a challenging exercise with an emphasis on teamwork and a fun way for students to celebrate the holiday season.
